CodeWeavers CrossOver 23.0.0 for macOS Linux and ChromeOS has been released

Hi folks,

I’m thrilled to announce that CodeWeavers has released CrossOver 23 for macOS, Linux and ChromeOS!

CrossOver 23 includes an update to Wine 8.0.1, bringing with it over 5,000 changes that offer improvements to a variety of applications. This release also includes an update to Wine Mono 7.4.0, vkd3d 1.8, DXVK 1.10.3 and MoltenVK 1.2.3.

Our most exciting feature is initial DirectX 12 support on macOS. Diablo II Resurrected and Diablo IV are currently running well on macOS Ventura, making them the first DirectX 12 games working on a released macOS version. This breakthrough was the culmination of years of development, and we look forward to continuing to aggressively pursue support for even more DirectX 12 titles. Diablo IV is also newly working on Linux with the CrossOver 23 release.

We’re pleased to announce that this release also includes initial support for geometry shaders and transform feedback on macOS Ventura. This unlocks many games that previously suffered from missing graphics or black screens in-game. Risk of Rain 2, TEKKEN 7, Octopath Traveler, Street Fighter V, Astroneer, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries and Trailmakers are just some of the titles that are now running on CrossOver 23. Note that using wined3d instead of DXVK will produce the best results for games using geometry shaders. And speaking of wined3d, our team also noted some nice performance improvements with wined3d.

EA App is now running on both macOS and Linux with CrossOver 23. Many EA App games are now working, including The Sims 4, Titanfall 2 and Mass Effect Legendary Edition. If you are running EA App games through Steam, make sure to install “EA App for Steam” into your bottle: that CrossTie installs needed dependencies.

For our Linux users, we worked around an XWayland bug, and Office 365 applications are now running with better performance with Wayland under CrossOver 23.

One of the most requested features we get for the CrossOver GUI is the ability to uninstall applications, and that is now possible with CrossOver 23. Uninstalling is now a quick operation: simply go to the “Bottle Details” at the bottom of the right sidebar for your bottle and right-click on the application listed under “Installed Software” to find the uninstall option. CrossOver also now deletes launchers for uninstalled applications. For example, launchers for games uninstalled through Steam will now be removed for you.

Of course, this release also contains some important bug fixes, including fixes for the latest Quicken, Steam, Rockstar Games Launcher, Age of Empires II Definitive Edition and Ubisoft Connect updates that caused those applications to stop working with CrossOver.

Lastly, a note about macOS Sonoma. Currently, CrossOver 23 runs on the Sonoma beta, but there are definitely known issues. We are working on fixes, and we plan to release an update to CrossOver 23 that will be fully compatible with it.

How to Install Microsoft Office on Linux

Microsoft Office on Linux is possible. Here are three methods for getting Microsoft Office installed in a Linux environment.

The most widely used office productivity suite in the world is Microsoft Office. It doesn't matter if your PC runs Windows 10 or macOS, it's likely that you're using Microsoft Office. If you're not, you have a colleague who is.

But your PC runs Linux. How on earth are you going to install Microsoft Office on Linux and use it without running into problems?

Getting Microsoft Office on Linux is easy. We cover three methods for running Microsoft Office in a Linux environment.

How to Install Microsoft Office on Linux

You have three ways to run Microsoft's industry-defining office software on a Linux computer:

  1. Use Microsoft Office on the web in a Linux browser
  2. Install Microsoft Office using PlayOnLinux
  3. Use Microsoft Office on a Windows virtual machine

Note that there is no Microsoft Office 365 for Linux. There is also no MS Office for Linux, but these methods let you run Microsoft Office on Linux without the enhancements Office 365 brings. In case you're not sure, here are the differences between MS Office and Microsoft Office 365.

Option 1: Use Microsoft Office in a Browser

It might not be the full Microsoft Office, but what is made available via your browser is certainly good enough for a big chunk of office-based tasks. It's an easy way to start without paying for the full Microsoft Office suite.

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook can all be accessed via your browser and Microsoft account.

Is your copy of Microsoft Office via monthly subscription to Office 365? Linux users can take advantage of the advanced browser-based tools that make this version of Office almost as complete as the Windows, Mac, and mobile versions.

As the suite is browser-based, it's not going to be available offline. However, you can make things smoother by setting office.live.com as a desktop shortcut. Files will be saved to the cloud, and the best way to manage this is with a Microsoft OneDrive account.

Without Office 365, you'll get a stripped-back collection of features. Though useful in a pinch, it doesn't do everything you expect.

Option 2: Install Microsoft Office Using PlayOnLinux

Need the full Microsoft Office on Linux? You'll need to install it. Now, you probably think that it isn't possible to install Windows software on Linux, and to a certain degree, that is true. Fortunately, other tools are available to help you install Windows software like Microsoft Word on Linux, along with the rest of the office suite.

The simplest way to install Microsoft Office on Ubuntu is using CrossOver or PlayOnLinux. The following instructions are for installing Office 365 on Ubuntu, but you'll be able to customize this for distros that use different package managers.

Install PlayOnLinux

Begin by opening a terminal and installing winbind:

sudo apt install winbind

This is a tool that ensures that PlayOnLinux correctly links the Windows login on the software you're attempting to install. You may also need to install cURL and p7zip-full if they're not already installed.

Next, install PlayOnLinux.

sudo apt install playonlinux

Alternatively, you can open your distro's app installer. On Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and above, use Ubuntu Software to search for PlayOnLinux and click Install. Wait for the installation to complete.

Now, all you need to do is launch PlayOnLinux from Menu > Applications. To install Microsoft Office, click the Office tab, then either use the search field or browse the list. Note that you'll need to install the full suite, as no individual apps (aside from Project 2010, Word Viewer, and Excel Viewer) are available.

You'll notice that with each app you select in PlayOnLinux, a summary of compatibility is displayed on the right. For further details about this, click the link. A browser window will take you to WineHQ, where you can find out more.

On Linux, you're limited to Microsoft Office 2016 as the latest version (the 32-bit version, at best). For the best, most stable results, use Microsoft Office 2016 (method B). For this, you'll need the installation media (or ISO file) or setup file, along with a genuine product key.

Install Microsoft Office on Ubuntu With PlayOnLinux

With the ISO file ready, click Install.

The PlayOnLinux wizard will start and prompt you to select a DVD-ROM or a setup file. Choose the appropriate option, then Next. If you're using a setup file, you'll need to browse to where this is stored on your Linux system.

Click Next to proceed with the installation. Once complete, Microsoft Office will be ready to run on Linux.

You'll be able to run Microsoft Office from the desktop without separately loading PlayOnLinux, which will run in the background.

Need a feature that is only available in the latest version of Microsoft Office? Consider CrossOver, a paid tool with a free trial that can run more recent versions of Microsoft Office.

Installation of CrossOver is more straightforward than PlayOnLinux, while installation of Office is along similar lines (there is a developmental connection between the two tools).

And yes, having Windows software running effortlessly on your Linux PC really is amazing, isn't it? You'll find that PlayOnLinux can support several other applications, as well as many Windows games. In short, this is how you can install MS Office on Ubuntu.

Option 3: Install Microsoft Office 365 on Linux in a Windows VM

There is another option for anyone wishing to install Microsoft Office on their Linux computer. This isn't as easy as the others, however, unless you're already running a Windows virtual machine.

In this case, all you need to do is boot your virtual machine, sign into Windows, and install Microsoft Office. Linux users can install any version of Office this way, unlike using Wine/PlayOnLinux, which can be useful for file compatibility.

Get Microsoft Office for Linux Today!

Microsoft Office is not the most ideal option for running office tasks on Linux systems. However, if it's what you need to get the job done, you have four good options to install MS Office on Linux.

Yes, open-source alternatives are best for most Linux office productivity tasks but installing Microsoft Office overcomes document compatibility problems. This can prove vital in meeting deadlines or accessing complex spreadsheets and databases.

Once you've sorted out installing Microsoft Office on Linux, don't stop there. You can install much more Windows software on Linux.

CodeWeavers CrossOver Mac 22 review

There will always be apps — mostly games — whose publishers won’t port them to the Mac for financial or contractual reasons. Codeweavers’ CrossOver offers a simple, convenient way to run many of those apps. The result isn’t as reliable or universal as other solutions, but it’s a lot cheaper and easier, and with CrossOver’s helpful database of app functionality and generous try-before-you-buy period, you can see whether it’ll run the apps you want to use before you commit your hard-earned cash.

CrossOver translates Windows commands into Mac ones on the fly — like hiring an interpreter to help you in a foreign country, rather than learning the language yourself. It’s based on the open-source WINE project, but its improvements to standard WINE make it a lot easier for everyday users to successfully run.

CrossOver 22 is only available from Codeweavers' web site. $74 gets you a full copy and a year’s worth of updates to the app. Once that period elapses, you can still use the copy you already have as long as you want to, but you won’t be able to download fresh updates. You'll have a limited window of time after your subscription expires to renew it for roughly $30.

You can also pay $494 for CrossOver Life, which removes the need for annual renewals. The company tends to offer once-a-year discounts around Black Friday, sometimes slashing the cost of a year's updates to as little as $15.

After a quick installation, CrossOver does most of the hard work for you. It sets up a “bottle” — a contained virtual environment — in which you can install basic Windows or Linux underpinnings, plus any apps you’d care to run. CrossOver builds in shortcuts to install popular apps like Steam, and it can seamlessly install apps from the Internet, from downloaded ISO files, or from a physical disc, should you have an external drive.

You can have multiple separate bottles for different apps, or put all the apps you use in a single vessel. As with containerized software setups like Docker, this makes CrossOver easier and less stressful to use. In the unlikely event that something goes horribly wrong inside a bottle, it won’t affect your larger system. You can just delete the bottle and start fresh.

CrossOver 22’s biggest leap forward lies in its overhauled interface.

Each new version of CrossOver offers under-the-hood improvements to help all apps in general and specific titles in particular run better. But CrossOver 22’s biggest leap forward lies in its overhauled interface.

Previous versions hid important toggles and features behind poorly designed contextual menus. CrossOver 22 takes its design cues instead from the Mac App Store, putting crucial options in full view. It’s easier than ever to run apps you’ve already installed, or add new ones.

Codeweavers’ database of popular apps and their compatibility, maintained by volunteer testers, is now more directly integrated into the app itself, rather than requiring a separate visit to Codeweavers's web site. That database isn’t comprehensive — some titles I’ve personally used under CrossOver aren’t included — but it’s a good place to start when you’re curious about whether a particular app will run there.

The path between original Windows code and successful Mac execution isn’t always straight. For instance, Windows games use a set of tools known as DirectX to enable 3D graphics. CrossOver has to pass those commands through an open-source translator called DXVK, which maps them to the open-source Vulkan 3D standard. These Vulkan commands must then go through another interpreter, MoltenVK, to run under Apple’s own 3D toolkit, Metal.  Each of these handoffs eats up processing power and makes the resulting games run slower and less reliably than they would if coded for the Mac from the get-go.

The beefier your processing power, the better performance you’ll get from CrossOver. Even though it’s an Intel native app, it runs best on Apple silicon under Rosetta 2 emulation, thanks to the sheer horsepower of the M1 and higher.  (CrossOver plans to eventually support Apple silicon, but Codeweavers says that transition is likely years away.)  Popular launcher apps like Steam, and simpler 2D games like Guacamelee, ran without a hitch in my tests, but more sophisticated titles had various degrees of tradeoffs.

If you want to game with CrossOver, having more than 8GB RAM or something more powerful than a basic M1 will likely serve you well.

When I ran 2017’s Star Wars: Battlefront II on my stock M1 Mac Mini, the game looked great. But depending on the game mode and the size and type of the environments I found myself in, performance ranged from fast and fluid to an unplayable crawl. I’ve seen YouTube videos of other CrossOver users playing the game much more smoothly, even on levels that choked my computer. If you want to game with CrossOver, having more than 8GB RAM or something more powerful than a basic M1 will likely serve you well.

Furthermore, Metal has different aims and priorities than DirectX, trading some measure of tech sophistication for the ability to run across MacOS, iOS, and tvOS. Even under Apple’s recently announced Metal 3, there are just some things DirectX does for which Metal lacks an easily translated equivalent.

Though the game mostly ran smoothly barring some pauses for loading, the world around my protagonist rendered as a mass of flickering black triangles.

I saw this firsthand playing Jedi: Fallen Order. Though the game mostly ran smoothly barring some pauses for loading, the world around my protagonist didn’t render right, presenting a mass of flickering black triangles instead of realistic surroundings. I was able to adapt and still enjoy the game, but if you’re looking for absolute fidelity, consider this fair warning.

And even if everything else goes swimmingly, there are some facets of Windows software that just won’t work outside that platform, no matter what. Barring some miracle in a future version, I’ll never know how well Star Wars: Squadrons runs on CrossOver, because the anti-cheating software for its multiplayer mode won’t cooperate, shutting down every attempt to install the game.

ntel Macs can directly install Windows through Boot Camp, but this option isn't available on newer Apple Silicon-powered Macs.

Virtual machines like VMWare Fusion and Parallels Desktop let Mac users run Windows and its apps. By emulating the entire Windows operating system, they  offer better compatibility with more kinds of PC apps, especially games.

Both apps are Apple Silicon native and can, with various degrees of workarounds, run Apple Silicon-friendly ARM-based versions of Windows 11 (and their apps) natively. CrossOver tops out at apps for Windows 10, and because of the engineering complexities involved, Codeweavers says it won't offer a native Apple Silicon version for several more years.

But Parallels and VMWare each cost more than a year of CrossOver updates, and neither will work without a copy of Windows itself. Even an older version of that can run you as much as $140.

CrossOver 22 is impressive in its simplicity — at least in terms of how easy it is to get select Windows applications up and running on macOS. It's by no means perfect, and your mileage will vary dramatically depending on the complexity of the applications you're looking to run, not to mention the power of your Mac computer itself. But with prudent use of the free trial to test your must-work apps, it's a great opportunity to bridge the gap between Apple and Microsoft's computing worlds.

CodeWeavers has Released CrossOver 17.5.0 for Linux and MacOS

I am delighted to announce that CodeWeavers has just released CrossOver 17.5.0 for both macOS and Linux. CrossOver 17.5.0 has many improvements to the core Windows compatibility layer and also specific enhancements for several popular applications.

CrossOver 17.5 supports the latest version of Microsoft Office 365 and includes a number of bug fixes to improve Office 2016. Users should see increased stability and encounter fewer crashes.

CrossOver 17.5 is the first step towards making CrossOver for macOS fully 64-bit compatible, in anticipation of Apple’s plan to end support for 32-bit applications. As part of our transition to 64-bit, we have removed the Legacy X Window System from CrossOver 17.5. The Legacy X Window System had been a fallback display technology since CrossOver 13, used in a limited set of circumstances. Users who require Legacy X Window System support should continue using an earlier version of CrossOver and contact our support team.

macOS customers with active support entitlements will be upgraded to CrossOver 17.5 the next time they launch CrossOver. Linux users can download the latest version from  CodeWeavers.

Run Microsoft Office 2016 and Games on Linux with CodeWeavers CrossOver 17

Yup, that means the latest version of CodeWeaver‘s commercial Wine offering also supports the latest version of Microsoft’s hugely popular Office suite, including both Home and Business editions.
And that’s big news. LibreOffice and Google Docs are near-perfect replacements for most of us, but many students and business still require the use of Microsoft Office products or file formats. As great as interoperability is these days few alternatives are as fuss-free as opting to install Office on Linux using Wine.

Other Windows software and games that feature improved CrossOver 17 support:
  • Microsoft Office 2016
  • Microsoft Office 2013
  • League of Legends
  • Everquest
  • Everquest II
  • WebSite-Watcher
  • Battle.Net
CrossOver 17 also features a large update to the Wine compatibility layer, a move that brings thousands of big fixes and usability improvements to users’ desktops and the (ever growing) array of software it supports.

Buy CrossOver 17

CrossOver 17 for Linux and macOS is available to purchase right now from the CodeWeavers website.

A free trial is also available if you want to test things out before you commit.

Wait: I thought Wine was free?

Wine is free, open-source software. It’s available to install on Ubuntu (and other Linux distributions) from the repos, for absolutely nothing.

CrossOver is (in effect) a commercial version of Wine. It’s not free; you have to pay for it. But many people are happy to do this — and no, they’re not crazy!

Features at a glance

By default, the program comes with support for a very large selection of Windows applications, allowing users to install and use them without the need for a Microsoft Windows license. CodeWeavers CrossOver for Android and Chromebooks beta to soon be released

James Ramey the president of CodeWeavers posted on his personal Facebook account earlier that a beta version of CrossOver Android could be released as soon as Monday August 1st 2016. CodeWeavers has been working on their Android and now Chromebook version of CrossOver for over a year now. The long wait is about over folks, if you ever dreamed of running Microsoft Windows Games or productivity application on your Android device it will soon be possible.

James also posted earlier in the week on his blog about CrossOver running on Android.

Sometimes, you find yourself staring at something you could never have imagined being possible based on its humble beginnings. The Wright Brothers pilot the airplane for 12 seconds; then, Neil Armstrong lands on the moon. The first microcomputer kit is made available in 1975; then, 120 million computers are sold in the world so far THIS YEAR! The Patterson–Gimlin video captures Big Foot on film in 1967; then, Big Foot stars in a series of beef jerky commercials. No one could ever have predicted that these initial events would lead into much bigger and better things. …

In 1996, CodeWeavers was started with the single goal of making Windows based applications run on Linux computers. It was the simple, honest, and noble goal of our founder, Jeremy White. In 1996, the technology pundits were convinced that Linux was set to take over the world. The only outstanding obstacle for the Linux platform was running Microsoft Office software. Hence, CrossOver was born (maybe more or less hatched). In 1996, there were no smart phones, no tablets, no Android, no Google, no Pokémon Go. There was no indication that computers would be more mobile, more connected, or more compact. And yet, here we are today.

So where is ‘here’, you ask? TODAY, Google released Android for Intel based ChromeBooks. AND CrossOver for Android installed and ran on a Google ChromeBook. More importantly, we were able to install the Steam Client into CrossOver for Android and run LIMBO and other games. MORE IMPORTANTLY, we have DirectX 9 support, keyboard support, mouse support, and sound support TODAY!!! PEOPLE, we are staring at a Leprechaun riding on the back of a Unicorn while taking a picture of a UFO. We are running CrossOver through Android on a ChromeBook running a Windows based game launched from the Steam client. THIS HAS NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE…EVER!!!

There will be more testing. There will inevitably be some cleanup work to do. There will be . BUT… CrossOver for Android is working and real and supporting the Steam Client and able to launch games and is actually playable. From our most humble beginnings, I don’t think anyone, Jeremy White included, ever dreamed that CrossOver would be able to run on ChromeBooks. And yet, here we are with people flying planes, people landing on the moon, and Big Foot. I’d say that’s pretty rare company for a small software developer from Minnesota.

http://www.wine-reviews.net/p/store.html

Provides you with an easy to install environment for running a huge selection of Windows applications on your Mac

The best thing about CrossOver Mac is that you can enjoy various Windows software on your Mac at home, in the office or at work without purchasing a Windows license.

In other words, you do not have to go to the trouble of installing a Windows virtual machine or creating a Boot Camp partition on which you can install a Windows copy.

The fact that you do not need to reboot your system to logon on a different operating system or share your resources with a Windows virtual machine translates into a faster and smoother application usage.

Extensive list of supported Windows programs and support for running a multitude of others that haven't yet been tested

CrossOver Mac comes with support for a long list of Windows programs and games, you can visit CrossOver Mac’s support page and view What Runs on CrossOver. Additionally, you can access the CrossOver Software Installer and search for the desired application using the built-in search form.

What is more, you can configure CrossOver Mac to install certain programs or games via specific installers and into the desire Bottle. The Installation process will guide you through the necessary steps to deploy your software.

Powerful and handy tool that enables you to use virtually any Windows program on a Mac

CrossOver Mac is easy-to-use and kind to your Mac’s resources, and provides a simple and clean user interface. From CrossOver Mac’s main window you can choose between two simple options: “Install Windows Software” and “Run Installed Software”.
As expected, the first option takes you to the above mentioned CrossOver Software Installer window from where you can install the programs you need while the second option enables you to run the installed programs.

About CrossOver Linux

CrossOver Linux is a commercial product that provides Linux users with an easy way to install various applications and games that run only on the proprietary Microsoft Windows operating systems. Technically, the application is a GUI (Graphical User Interface) front-end for the well known Wine software, which provides a set of APIs and libraries to emulate several Microsoft Windows OSes on top of an open source Linux-based operating system.

Features at a glance

By default, the program comes with support for a very large selection of Windows applications, allowing users to install and use them without the need for a Microsoft Windows license. However, this does not mean that you won’t have to own a specific software license.
It is distributed as a binary packages that support the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS or older distributions, Ubuntu 12.10 or newer, Linux Mint 14 or newer, Debian GNU/Linux Wheezy or any other distro that uses Debian packages, as well as Red Hat, Fedora and other RPM-based operating systems.

Supported Windows applications

Considering the fact that CrossOver is just a simple user interface for Wine, it comes with support for all the applications that can be installed by the latter, such as the entire Microsoft Office 2010/2007/2003/XP/2000/97 suite, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Outlook, and Microsoft Access. Among some other Windows-only applications that can be installed by this software, we can mention Internet Explorer, Microsoft Project, Adobe Photoshop, Lotus Notes, Microsoft Visio, Quicken, FrameMaker, Shockwave Director, QuickTime, Windows Media Player, as well as numerous games.

Sharing the joy :)

If you have friends or family who own a Mac or Linux computer just share the link to this page with them. or post this link and details about the sale on your social media accounts, e.g Facebook, Twitter etc etc...

Running Mac OSX and Linux in a Windows world

Many IT shops don't give a second thought to supporting Mac and Linux OSes because they're concerned with standardization. Windows is the go-to, but alternative OSes deserve some love.

Windows 10 will likely become the most used desktop operating system at some point, but Apple's Mac OS X and Linux have their purposes and places in the enterprise, too.

Many servers around the world run Linux, but on the desktop, the OS is used mainly by academics, researchers and developers. Amazon and Google use Linux to support many business processes, and U.S. Department of Defense employees use a Linux-based operating system on a CD or USB stick to log in to secure networks from untrusted PCs while they are away from the office.

Macs have historically been preferred by graphic designers and digital artists, and today executives and frequent travelers join that list because Macs offer better security and seamless integration with Apple iOS devices.

Pretty much everybody else uses Windows. Mac OS X accounts for less than 10% of the overall desktop market share, and Linux desktops fall into the "Other" category. They're grouped with Windows Vista, Windows NT, Windows 2000 and old versions of Mac OS X. It's hard to believe that systems as feature-rich and robust as the latest Ubuntu, Fedora and Mint distributions fall into the collective crumb bin of overall market share.

Advantages of Mac OS X and Linux

It might look like Mac OS X and Linux fill too narrow a niche for enterprise use, but they're simply underrated. They have been forced out of the mainstream as many IT shops look to standardize OSes and hardware to streamline support and maintenance.

But Mac OS X and Linux are far less susceptible to malware than Windows. OS X in particular includes code-signing to prevent most types of malware. Because Windows is the dominant desktop OS, malware creators target it much more often than any other OS. Fortifying the Windows OS and cleaning up after an attack cost IT an enormous amount of money every year.

Mac OS X and Linux are much more stable and reliable than Windows, and Linux is hands down the most forgiving of older peripherals and legacy hardware. A modern Linux distribution runs reasonably well on a computer built for Windows XP. That same computer might not be able to run Windows 10, and drivers could be a major issue. Additionally, the productivity software packages available for Mac and Linux are comparable to Microsoft Office -- and in some cases compatible with it. Linux productivity suites are usually free.

Integrating Mac and Linux clients on a Windows enterprise network

Windows and Macs have built-in features that provide simple file sharing across a network. Samba is a software application that allows Linux and Windows to share files and printers. It works fine on smaller networks, but is quickly outclassed or becomes impractical on large networks that run Active Directory.

Recent releases of Mac OS X and Linux work with Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM), which lets Mac and Linux PCs join Active Directory much like a Windows client. With the Clients for Additional Operating Systems module, IT administrators can use SCCM to discover, audit, enforce settings and push patches to Mac, Linux and Unix computers.

Admins can also use management software such as the Casper Suite from JAMF Software for Mac integration, which is similar to SCCM. Active Directory bridging is available from a number of companies -- such as Centrify and BeyondTrust -- to manage Linux and Mac systems in a Windows environment.

Another option to support Macs is to run OS X Server on the network. It doesn't include Active Directory components, as of this writing, but an admin can use the server's Profile Manager to set Mac policies based on Active Directory groups. The Mac clients served by OS X Server can communicate with Windows clients, share files, share printers and more.

Regarding email and Microsoft Exchange, Mac OS X's Mail and Calendar can connect, but will run with fewer hiccups if IMAP and POP3 are enabled in Exchange. Several Linux email clients provide support for Exchange.

Running Windows programs on Mac OS X and Linux

Companies that want to run Windows applications on certain Mac or Linux systems can look to the free open source program Wine for help. It's a compatibility layer that can run Windows applications on other OSes. CodeWeaver CrossOver Linux is a similar option for Linux distributions. Admins can also install a virtual machine, such as Oracle VirtualBox or Parallels Desktop for Mac, and then run a Windows OS and associated applications with full network connectivity.

Vineyard now has CrossOver support Wine Staging features and more

Vineyard for Ubuntu and Linux has seen some development during the past few weeks and has received bug-fixes and new features! Some of the more advanced functionality – Vineyard now supports CodeWeavers CrossOver – New support has been added for Wine-Staging !

Here are some of the changes from the last two weeks of development:

New Features:
  • Support for CrossOver.
  • Auto-detection of supported Wine features.
  • Support for a number of Staging features and common patches:
    • CSMT (both dll and patched versions, ie. Wine-Staging, CrossOver and custom Wine versions are all supported)
    • DXVA2 VAAPI
    • EAX Emulation
  • “Run in a terminal” option when launching Windows executables (with vineyard-launcher).
Fixes and Improvements:
  • Safer detection of installed Wine versions.
  • Support for user installed Wine versions in $HOME/.local/share/wineversions.
  • Better support for launching programs from desktop shortcuts.
  • Updated the Windows version information to match the latest Wine releases.
  • Added support for 64bit Windows XP configuration.

And since a picture is worth a thousand words:

The new prefix creation dialogue

New builds in the PPA

I’ve overhauled the packaging of Vineyard, and we now have builds back up for all LTS (long term support) Ubuntu releases going back to 12.04 (Precise) as well as for 15.10 (Wily) and 16.04 (Xenial). 16.04 deprecated the python-support package in favor of dh-python (in line with Debian), so Vineyard can now be built using both.

The name of the vineyard-testing PPA has also been changed to “PPA for Vineyard” as it really is the current stable PPA; the link is the same, so there’s no need to change your APT configuration.

Status update for Microsoft Office 2013 on Linux with CodeWeavers CrossOver

Back on November 12th 2015 I posted about Microsoft Office 2013 running on Linux with CodeWeavers upcoming CrossOver 15 release. Unfortunately, I got a little ahead of myself and thought Office 2013 would be supported by now. But due to the complexity of supporting such a large piece of software like a office suite it's taken a little longer then what I expected.

Here is a quick overview of Microsoft Office 2013 status on Linux once again.

Microsoft Office 2013 (code named Office 15) is a version of Microsoft Office, a productivity suite for Microsoft Windows. It is the successor to Microsoft Office 2010 and the predecessor to Microsoft Office 2016. It includes extended file format support, user interface updates and support for touch among its new features. Office 2013 is suitable for IA-32 and x64 systems and requires Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 or a later version of either. A version of Office 2013 comes included on Windows RT devices. Mainstream support ends on April 10, 2018. Extended support ends on April 11, 2023.

Development on this version of Microsoft Office was started in 2010 and ended on October 11, 2012, when Microsoft Office 2013 was released to manufacturing. Microsoft released Office 2013 to general availability on January 29, 2013. This version includes new features such as integration support for online services (including OneDrive, Outlook.com, Skype, Yammer and Flickr), improved format support for Office Open XML (OOXML), OpenDocument (ODF) and Portable Document Format (PDF) and support for multi-touch interfaces.

Microsoft Office 2013 comes in twelve different editions, including three editions for retail outlets, two editions for volume licensing channel, five subscription-based editions available through Microsoft Office 365 program, the web application edition known as Office Web Apps and the Office RT edition made for tablets and mobile devices. Office Web Apps are available free of charge on the web although enterprises may obtain on-premises installations for a price. Microsoft Office applications may be obtained individually; this includes Microsoft Visio, Microsoft Project and Microsoft SharePoint Designer which are not included in any of the twelve editions.

So, What has changed sense November 2015? Office 2013 can now log into MSN and download templates just like on Windows. DirectWrite has also seen many improvements over the past six months. It looks like most of the UI bugs have been fixed now. The installation and overall stability will have improved and I would hazard to say the registration has improved.

Carom Wills the Quality Assurance representative at CodeWeavers posted a few days back a screen-shot of Word 2013 logged into MSN, just look at the top right corner and you will see Cody Weaver as the user.

 Specs :

Distro : Ubuntu Linux 14.04.3 LTS
CrossOver Release : 15.2 pre release build
Microsoft Office : Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013

You can go to MSDN and download Microsoft Office Professional Plus and get a free 60 day trial here. After you have registered and got the download it's time to run the install with CrossOver Linux 15 on your Linux Computer. Keep in mind this will install and run on any of the popular modern Linux distributions, Ubuntu is in no way a requirement.

How to run Windows programs on Linux with CodeWeavers CrossOver

Want to move to Linux, but there's this one application that's keeping you stuck on Windows? CodeWeaver's CrossOver Linux may be exactly what you need.

Just because there's a Windows application you must use doesn't mean you must run Windows. CodeWeavers CrossOver Linux enables you to run many popular Windows applications on Linux. Supported Windows applications include Microsoft Office (from Office 97 to Office 2010), Intuit Quicken, and some versions of Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop CS. CrossOver also runs games. For example, you can play such popular online games as World of Warcraft and Guild Wars.

Need Microsoft Office on your Linux PC? Thanks to CodeWeavers CrossOver that's not a problem.
Sure, with powerful enough hardware you could run your Windows applications on Linux inside a virtual machine (VM) such as Oracle's VirtualBox. The problem with these is that they don't run well on systems with limited resources. If CrossOver supports the applications you need you won't need to worry with fitting a VM.

CrossOver runs many but not all Windows programs. For example, you can run Visio 2010 on CrossOver Linux. AutoCAD? Not so much.

Will your program run on Linux, or for that matter CrossOver Mac? CrossOver keeps a complete listing of what runs, and what doesn't. You can also try CrossOver with a 15-day free trial to make sure the software you need works well on a Linux system.

CrossOver is based on the open-source project Wine, an implementation of the Windows application programming interface (API) on top of the Unix/Linux operating system family. Wine is a mature project with 20 plus years of work behind it.

Technically, you don't need CrossOver Linux to run Windows applications on Linux. You can do it with Wine alone -- if you know what you're doing. CrossOver gives you automated installation of Windows applications and technical support. In short, CrossOver makes it much easier to install and manage Windows applications on Linux.

CrossOver 15, the latest version, is available as a 15-day free trial. If you like it will cost $59.95. It comes with 12 months of upgrades and technical support. CrossOver is supported on Debian, Fedora, Mint, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and Ubuntu. It should work on any Linux, but these are the officially supported distributions. CrossOver requires almost nothing from your PC except that it be capable of running Linux. Any PC from the last five years will have no trouble running it.

There's also a good free program, PlaysOnLinux, which duplicates some of CrossOver's functionality but doesn't have much support. If you're new to Linux, CrossOver is the best way to go. Since you can try it for free, you'll know before you buy whether it supports your favorite Windows applications.
