Yes you are the one

Today I woke up to a surprise, a package was on the counter waiting for me from CodeWeavers. About a month ago Jana Schmid was announcing on CodeWeavers Twitter feed that they were giving away free T-Shits to people who posted reviews of their upcoming CrossOver Android product. So I sent Jana a e-mail asking for a shirt and happily it arrived today.

One XXL T-Shirt :)

I would like to say "Thank You" to everyone at CodeWeavers for the T-Shirt I absolutely love it.

CodeWeavers CrossOver Linux Brings Improved Support For Windows Apps

Wine is a free and open-source compatibility layer software application that is aimed to allow applications designed for Microsoft Windows applications to run fully on Linux and Unix-like operating systems.

To make things less hectic for developers, Wine also has its software library called Winelib allowing developers to compile Windows application and later port them to Linux.

https://www.codeweavers.com/store/?dealcode=weaveme

Codeweavers developers whose aim is to make it easy for users to run Windows-based apps without the need for purchased licenses, rebooting or the use of virtual machines allowing Microsoft Windows productivity apps and games to run smoothly on Linux based operating systems.

The program utilizes the latest version of Wine which at the moment is version 1.9.15 which is adopted for commercial Crossover applications that provide an easy to use GUI for Wine on Linux ad Mac.

CrossOver 15.2.0 has been released and it brings improved support for Microsoft Office 2007 and Microsoft Office 2010 suite making it easier to embed fonts when exporting documents to the PDF file format and address a recent issue concerning crashes that occurs when signing into the Tencent QQ Instant messenger software.

The new version of Crossover also brings improvements to the automatic detection of the available amount of video RAM and also correctly identify various graphics cards that were somehow not correctly recognized in the previous version of the software.

Running Mac OSX and Linux in a Windows world

Many IT shops don't give a second thought to supporting Mac and Linux OSes because they're concerned with standardization. Windows is the go-to, but alternative OSes deserve some love.

Windows 10 will likely become the most used desktop operating system at some point, but Apple's Mac OS X and Linux have their purposes and places in the enterprise, too.

Many servers around the world run Linux, but on the desktop, the OS is used mainly by academics, researchers and developers. Amazon and Google use Linux to support many business processes, and U.S. Department of Defense employees use a Linux-based operating system on a CD or USB stick to log in to secure networks from untrusted PCs while they are away from the office.

Macs have historically been preferred by graphic designers and digital artists, and today executives and frequent travelers join that list because Macs offer better security and seamless integration with Apple iOS devices.

Pretty much everybody else uses Windows. Mac OS X accounts for less than 10% of the overall desktop market share, and Linux desktops fall into the "Other" category. They're grouped with Windows Vista, Windows NT, Windows 2000 and old versions of Mac OS X. It's hard to believe that systems as feature-rich and robust as the latest Ubuntu, Fedora and Mint distributions fall into the collective crumb bin of overall market share.

Advantages of Mac OS X and Linux

It might look like Mac OS X and Linux fill too narrow a niche for enterprise use, but they're simply underrated. They have been forced out of the mainstream as many IT shops look to standardize OSes and hardware to streamline support and maintenance.

But Mac OS X and Linux are far less susceptible to malware than Windows. OS X in particular includes code-signing to prevent most types of malware. Because Windows is the dominant desktop OS, malware creators target it much more often than any other OS. Fortifying the Windows OS and cleaning up after an attack cost IT an enormous amount of money every year.

Mac OS X and Linux are much more stable and reliable than Windows, and Linux is hands down the most forgiving of older peripherals and legacy hardware. A modern Linux distribution runs reasonably well on a computer built for Windows XP. That same computer might not be able to run Windows 10, and drivers could be a major issue. Additionally, the productivity software packages available for Mac and Linux are comparable to Microsoft Office -- and in some cases compatible with it. Linux productivity suites are usually free.

Integrating Mac and Linux clients on a Windows enterprise network

Windows and Macs have built-in features that provide simple file sharing across a network. Samba is a software application that allows Linux and Windows to share files and printers. It works fine on smaller networks, but is quickly outclassed or becomes impractical on large networks that run Active Directory.

Recent releases of Mac OS X and Linux work with Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM), which lets Mac and Linux PCs join Active Directory much like a Windows client. With the Clients for Additional Operating Systems module, IT administrators can use SCCM to discover, audit, enforce settings and push patches to Mac, Linux and Unix computers.

Admins can also use management software such as the Casper Suite from JAMF Software for Mac integration, which is similar to SCCM. Active Directory bridging is available from a number of companies -- such as Centrify and BeyondTrust -- to manage Linux and Mac systems in a Windows environment.

Another option to support Macs is to run OS X Server on the network. It doesn't include Active Directory components, as of this writing, but an admin can use the server's Profile Manager to set Mac policies based on Active Directory groups. The Mac clients served by OS X Server can communicate with Windows clients, share files, share printers and more.

Regarding email and Microsoft Exchange, Mac OS X's Mail and Calendar can connect, but will run with fewer hiccups if IMAP and POP3 are enabled in Exchange. Several Linux email clients provide support for Exchange.

Running Windows programs on Mac OS X and Linux

Companies that want to run Windows applications on certain Mac or Linux systems can look to the free open source program Wine for help. It's a compatibility layer that can run Windows applications on other OSes. CodeWeaver CrossOver Linux is a similar option for Linux distributions. Admins can also install a virtual machine, such as Oracle VirtualBox or Parallels Desktop for Mac, and then run a Windows OS and associated applications with full network connectivity.

Status update for Microsoft Office 2013 on Linux with CodeWeavers CrossOver

Back on November 12th 2015 I posted about Microsoft Office 2013 running on Linux with CodeWeavers upcoming CrossOver 15 release. Unfortunately, I got a little ahead of myself and thought Office 2013 would be supported by now. But due to the complexity of supporting such a large piece of software like a office suite it's taken a little longer then what I expected.

Here is a quick overview of Microsoft Office 2013 status on Linux once again.

Microsoft Office 2013 (code named Office 15) is a version of Microsoft Office, a productivity suite for Microsoft Windows. It is the successor to Microsoft Office 2010 and the predecessor to Microsoft Office 2016. It includes extended file format support, user interface updates and support for touch among its new features. Office 2013 is suitable for IA-32 and x64 systems and requires Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 or a later version of either. A version of Office 2013 comes included on Windows RT devices. Mainstream support ends on April 10, 2018. Extended support ends on April 11, 2023.

Development on this version of Microsoft Office was started in 2010 and ended on October 11, 2012, when Microsoft Office 2013 was released to manufacturing. Microsoft released Office 2013 to general availability on January 29, 2013. This version includes new features such as integration support for online services (including OneDrive, Outlook.com, Skype, Yammer and Flickr), improved format support for Office Open XML (OOXML), OpenDocument (ODF) and Portable Document Format (PDF) and support for multi-touch interfaces.

Microsoft Office 2013 comes in twelve different editions, including three editions for retail outlets, two editions for volume licensing channel, five subscription-based editions available through Microsoft Office 365 program, the web application edition known as Office Web Apps and the Office RT edition made for tablets and mobile devices. Office Web Apps are available free of charge on the web although enterprises may obtain on-premises installations for a price. Microsoft Office applications may be obtained individually; this includes Microsoft Visio, Microsoft Project and Microsoft SharePoint Designer which are not included in any of the twelve editions.

So, What has changed sense November 2015? Office 2013 can now log into MSN and download templates just like on Windows. DirectWrite has also seen many improvements over the past six months. It looks like most of the UI bugs have been fixed now. The installation and overall stability will have improved and I would hazard to say the registration has improved.

Carom Wills the Quality Assurance representative at CodeWeavers posted a few days back a screen-shot of Word 2013 logged into MSN, just look at the top right corner and you will see Cody Weaver as the user.

 Specs :

Distro : Ubuntu Linux 14.04.3 LTS
CrossOver Release : 15.2 pre release build
Microsoft Office : Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013

You can go to MSDN and download Microsoft Office Professional Plus and get a free 60 day trial here. After you have registered and got the download it's time to run the install with CrossOver Linux 15 on your Linux Computer. Keep in mind this will install and run on any of the popular modern Linux distributions, Ubuntu is in no way a requirement.

CodeWeavers CrossOver 15.1.0 on Ubuntu Linux 16.04

A Quick overview of getting CodeWeavers CrossOver 15.1.0 installed on Ubuntu Linux 16.04

Ubuntu's latest release, Xenial Xerus, has been out since April 21.

The latest long term stable release has been working for our testing purposes since the day it dropped but we had to get CrossOver 15.1.0 installed first. In this release, the Ubuntu Software Center is gone. It has been replaced by GNOME Software.

While this will be a positive change for the distribution, it seems Ubuntu Software has a few hiccups. While the Ubuntu Desktop Team works to resolve these problems, we would like to make sure our customers can install CrossOver.

Please download the trial version of CrossOver before starting these steps. Or, if you already have an account, please login and download CrossOver.

The easiest way to get CrossOver installed with Ubuntu 16.04 is a little terminal dancing. If you're new to Linux or Ubuntu, that is as easy as holding down the CTRL, ALT, and T keys at once to call a terminal window.

Terminal Window Ubuntu 16.04

First, bring your system up to date:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade

Next, we like to use GDebi Package Installer to install CrossOver. Get it by typing in terminal:

sudo apt-get install gdebi

Ubuntu 16.04 is now ready to install CrossOver. In terminal, give the command:

sudo gdebi ~/Downloads/crossover_15.1.0-1.deb

Now, run CrossOver for the first time:

/opt/cxoffice/bin/crossover

On first run, CrossOver will check to see if every library it needed was installed. If not, it will again attempt to install the libraries it needs. To do this, it will open a new terminal window and prompt for administrative credentials. Please provide these credentials so CrossOver can complete the set-up process.

Why switch to Windows 10 or a Mac when you can use Linux

My buddy David Gewirtz recently wrote about the question of whether you should move from Windows 7 to Windows 10 or a Mac. I have another suggestion: Linux. Specifically Linux Mint 17.3, Rosa, with the Cinnamon desktop.

Linux Mint 17.3 is a great replacement for Windows 7. In fact, it's a great desktop operating system period.
Yes, I'm serious. I use all the above desktops -- yes I'm a Windows 7 and 10 user as well as a Linux guy -- and for people I think Mint 17.3 makes a great desktop.

I've been using Mint as my main Linux desktop for years now. Unlike some desktops I could name -- cough, Windows 8, cough -- Linux Mint has never had a flop. Every year that goes by, this operating system keeps getting better. The other desktops? Not so much.
Let's take a closer look.at Windows 7 vs. Linux Mint 17.3

UI Differences

There's really not much. While it's even easier for a Windows XP user to move to Mint than a Windows 7 user, any Windows user won't have any trouble picking up Linux Mint with Cinnamon. There's a Start Menu and settings are easy to find.

I regard Cinnamon 2.8 as the ultimate Window, Icon, Menu, Pointer (WIMP) interface. Is it ideal for tablets or smartphones? No. Is it perfect for long-time PC users? Yes.

Cinnamon does add some nice features. For example, if you mouse over the Window list, you'll now see a thumbnail for each application. It also has improved performance, system tray status indicators, and music and power applets.

What I like best about Cinnamon is that it doesn't get in the way. There's no learning curve. You may have never used Linux in your life but you can just sit down and start opening directories, running applications, and modify your PC's settings.

One small feature I like a lot, since I always run multiple work-spaces, is that the work-space switcher applet now shows a visual representation of what's running in each work-space.
Don't like Cinnamon? Unlike any version of Windows, Linux Mint comes with many different desktops. These include KDE, MATE and Xfce. Find one you like and enjoy,

Application Selection

It's true that Linux doesn't have as many application choice as Windows does. But, how many applications do you really need in 2016? I do most of my work these days on the cloud with software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications. These apps work just as well on Chrome, my favorite Web browser, on Mint as they do on any other desktop.

That said, there are many excellent Linux desktop programs. For example, instead of Microsoft Office I use LibreOffice 5. I don't use it because it's free, although most Linux desktop applications won't cost you a cent, but because it's an excellent office suite in its own right.

I also use Evolution instead of Outlook for e-mail and GIMP instead of Photoshop for my basic graphic editing needs. The bottom line is that are many great Linux programs that you can use in place of Windows appliations.

Are there some Windows programs that you can't live without? Well, you don't have to live without them.
There are two ways to run Windows programs on Linux. One is to use CodeWeaver's CrossOver Linux. This program enables you to run many popular Windows applications on Linux. Supported Windows applications include Microsoft Office (from Office 97 to Office 2010), Quicken, and some versions of Adobe Photoshop.

The application you absolutely must have won't work with CrossOver? Then run it on a virtual machine (VM) program such as Oracle's Virtual-box.

I use both methods and they work well.

How to run Windows programs on Linux with CodeWeavers CrossOver

Want to move to Linux, but there's this one application that's keeping you stuck on Windows? CodeWeaver's CrossOver Linux may be exactly what you need.

Just because there's a Windows application you must use doesn't mean you must run Windows. CodeWeavers CrossOver Linux enables you to run many popular Windows applications on Linux. Supported Windows applications include Microsoft Office (from Office 97 to Office 2010), Intuit Quicken, and some versions of Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop CS. CrossOver also runs games. For example, you can play such popular online games as World of Warcraft and Guild Wars.

Need Microsoft Office on your Linux PC? Thanks to CodeWeavers CrossOver that's not a problem.
Sure, with powerful enough hardware you could run your Windows applications on Linux inside a virtual machine (VM) such as Oracle's VirtualBox. The problem with these is that they don't run well on systems with limited resources. If CrossOver supports the applications you need you won't need to worry with fitting a VM.

CrossOver runs many but not all Windows programs. For example, you can run Visio 2010 on CrossOver Linux. AutoCAD? Not so much.

Will your program run on Linux, or for that matter CrossOver Mac? CrossOver keeps a complete listing of what runs, and what doesn't. You can also try CrossOver with a 15-day free trial to make sure the software you need works well on a Linux system.

CrossOver is based on the open-source project Wine, an implementation of the Windows application programming interface (API) on top of the Unix/Linux operating system family. Wine is a mature project with 20 plus years of work behind it.

Technically, you don't need CrossOver Linux to run Windows applications on Linux. You can do it with Wine alone -- if you know what you're doing. CrossOver gives you automated installation of Windows applications and technical support. In short, CrossOver makes it much easier to install and manage Windows applications on Linux.

CrossOver 15, the latest version, is available as a 15-day free trial. If you like it will cost $59.95. It comes with 12 months of upgrades and technical support. CrossOver is supported on Debian, Fedora, Mint, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and Ubuntu. It should work on any Linux, but these are the officially supported distributions. CrossOver requires almost nothing from your PC except that it be capable of running Linux. Any PC from the last five years will have no trouble running it.

There's also a good free program, PlaysOnLinux, which duplicates some of CrossOver's functionality but doesn't have much support. If you're new to Linux, CrossOver is the best way to go. Since you can try it for free, you'll know before you buy whether it supports your favorite Windows applications.

How to Install GardenCAD on Mac with CrossOver

We are asked about Windows software running in CrossOver all the time. The range of programs varies so much that it's always questionable on what it might take to get the application running. Most of the time, it's easy.

Recently, we received a request for a second look at GardenCAD and it's big brother, gCADPlus. To our surprise, the team for gCADPlus checked us out a few years ago and put together a handy walk-through for our product.

What they didn't know, we've made it easier than ever to install an unsupported program, like GardenCAD. To be clear, an unsupported program is a Windows program that has not been regularly tested by a member of the CodeWeavers team. Before we get too far, let's talk about what it takes to install an unsupported program.

First, open CrossOver (on your Mac today):

CrossOver Opening Screen
After you click on "Install a Windows Application", search for your application:

Search for gCAD
When your application doesn't show up, it's some "Other Application" that CrossOver doesn't know about... and that's okay. More applications than ever run in CrossOver.

There's no reason to give up here, make the selection of "Other Application" and open the next section of CrossOver, Select an Installer and click "Choose Installer File":

Choose Installer File...
Show CrossOver where your installer file is, highlight it and click, "Use this Installer":

Use This Installer
CrossOver will look like this:

CrossOver and gCADplus
Click Install!

For gCADplus, the installer starts, completes and gCADplus launches!

gCADplus Launches
And, it does things:

gCADplus in CrossOver
It really is that easy!

Microsoft Office 2013 on Linux with CodeWeavers CrossOver

Microsoft Office 2013 (code named Office 15) is a version of Microsoft Office, a productivity suite for Microsoft Windows.

Office Web Apps are available free of charge on the web although enterprises may obtain on-premises installations for a price. Microsoft Office applications may be obtained individually; this includes Microsoft Visio, Microsoft Project and Microsoft SharePoint Designer which are not included in any of the twelve editions.

In the upcoming release of CodeWeavers CrossOver Linux 15 we will see many new and exciting changes over the current CrossOver 14 edition that's available now. Don't get me wrong CrossOver 14 is a nice release and runs many productivity applications and games that we care about today.

CrossOver Linux 15 is a whole new ball game, it will come with Microsoft Office 2013 functionality, the beginnings of DirectX 10 and 11 support, a newly refreshed and modern Graphical User Interface (GUI) and incorporate just over a full years worth of Wine from WineHQ changes into the release. And most likely will ship with the upcoming Wine 1.8 stable release or a variant of that release.

Not only will we get a newly updated Graphical User Interface (GUI) we will also get a totally new version of Wine with many DirectX 10 and 11 enhancements. So the day of playing DirectX 10 and 11 games on Linux is soon approaching. I can only imagine the effects on work productivity as we will be like children in a candy store once again.

So on to the main article, this isn't a how-to or user guide but simply a news post. CrossOver 15 is still under extremely heavy development and testing. This news post is to inform everyone of a small sample of whats soon coming our way.
