MacGourmet Deluxe is the toptenreviews Gold Award winner
If you're like most cooks, you probably already have a system worked out for storing recipes on your computer. Since you can find most recipes you want online, investing in recipe software may seem unnecessary. However, Mac cookbook software has a wealth of tools that go beyond what even the most organized cooks could do on their own.
Some of these recipe organizers come with hundreds or even thousands of preinstalled recipes or give you exclusive access to a vast library of recipes online. Most Mac recipe software also lets you import and export recipes that you find online or have in your personal recipe files. The ability to import and store them all in one place is an enormous convenience. You can plan out meals by the day, week or month and get nutritional information about each recipe with the click of a button.
While this lineup focuses exclusively on the best Mac recipe software we found, if you use a PC or want to access recipes through your Android device, our cookbook and recipe software reviews may be more helpful. For more information, check out our articles on cookbook and recipe software.
Mac Recipe Software: What to Look For
A recipe software package should have all the essentials, such as tools that let you import, organize and manage your recipes. It should also have extras to accommodate your family's specific needs. If you're cooking for several people, you'll want a program that automatically adjusts the ingredients based on the number of people. You'll also want software that helps you with shopping lists so you don't have to make multiple trips to the store. We selected recipe management software that lets you easily import recipes into your database and effectively organize and file them.
Although many people cite cooking as a favorite pastime, it can be a hassle to attend to all of the small details in the kitchen, both prior to and during cooking. You want software that acts as an electronic organizer, putting your favorite recipes at your fingertips and allowing you to focus on preparing food, not finding recipes. As we used and evaluated the software featured in our reviews, we found some vital criteria for choosing the best Mac recipe software.
The best recipe programs offer a plethora of options for documenting and editing items in the recipe database. First, programs should include preinstalled recipes to get you started. Each Mac recipe manager should have numerous fields for various information, such as the recipe source, cooking notes or variations, food and beverage pairings, substitutions, serving size adjustments, and preference and difficulty ratings.
You want to be equipped with all the tools you need to make the cooking experience as seamless as possible. Searching through a box of 8 x 5 index cards for the right recipe is as obsolete as card catalogs at the local library. But this software goes beyond mere electronic convenience. The best Mac recipe software lets you sync your PC recipe files with an iPhone app, so when you import recipes you find online, they automatically transfer to your iPhone. You can adjust serving sizes in real time on your mobile device as you prepare food if you're using a new recipe with a big group. Mac recipe software should also make it easy to share recipes online, print them off individually or collect them in book form.
The best recipe software for Mac allows you to create menu plans weeks or even months in advance so you can stay organized and maintain a healthy diet. Many programs also allow you to create shopping lists, which is convenient because it lets you keep track of your inventory. It also streamlines the shopping process, reducing the time spent figuring out what you need from the store. It all but eliminates extra trips to the store because you forgot important ingredients. Also look for programs that can tell you the nutritional value of recipes and individual ingredients. If you're short on time, many programs give you suggestions of dishes you can make with what you have on hand.
Resources to answer your questions are a vital part of any software package. Most programs provide access to resources such as communication with other users via online forums, which is very useful. Also look for programs that offer email support, online manuals, how-to sections and video tutorials.
Mac Recipe Software: Our Verdict and Recommendations
We identified the best cookbook and recipe software for Macs on the market. The best options are MacGourmet Deluxe, Cook'n Recipe Organizer and Computer Cuisine Deluxe. Each has a lot to offer in terms of keeping your library of recipes organized and up to date. MacGourmet has stellar cooking tools that let you plan meals weeks in advance and generate advanced shopping lists. Cook'n Recipe Organizer provides excellent help with setting nutritional values and serving sizes for your family, and it goes beyond lists to offer shopping strategies. Computer Cuisine Deluxe has more than 1,000 preloaded recipes and an attractive, easy-to-navigate user interface.
When choosing cookbook and recipe software for your Mac, first decide what your needs are. If you are a gourmet cook, you may want features that allow you to edit recipes and change serving sizes. However, if you don't cook for many people, you may find that more basic Mac recipe software suits you best. One such basic software package is Paprika Recipe Manager, an inexpensive program that doesn't come with preloaded recipes but lets you add your own recipes quickly and easily.
Mac recipe software makes recipe collection a simple and painless task. The best recipe software for Mac combines extensive recipe management tools, effective meal-planning capabilities, a simple user interface and great support options. Our Mac recipe software reviews help you narrow down your choices and find the program that works best for you.
CONS / The number of preloaded recipes is somewhat limited.
VERDICT / MacGourmet is the best Mac recipe software we reviewed because of its exceptional features and easy-to-use interface.
MacGourmet Deluxe is among the best-known recipe programs on the market. It offers an impressive combination of tools such as smart lists and detailed search options. MacGourmet's advanced features and ease of use make it our top choice among the Mac recipe software we reviewed and winner of our Top Ten Reviews Gold Award.

Mariner Software Paperless 2 review
Paperless is compatible with most scanners but Mariner Software highly recommends the use of Fujitsu ScanSnap S1100, ScanSnap S1300 or ScanSnap S1500 scanners. Mariner Software is an authorized partner of Fujitsu and Paperless is designed to work seamlessly with Fujitsu ScanSnap line.
Paperless stands out for numerous of reasons and it makes organizing papers as easy as it could get. The software has a good usability. The large graphical icons at the top of the toolbar give you an access to all of the most significant functions. The main window of the software has three columns. There is a file browser on the left, document image in the middle at the top, list of documents below it and the details about the currently selected document on the right.
You can store almost any type of document such as pdf, web archives, emails, word, excel, RTF, JPEG and TIFF. Conveniently, you can scan documents directly to Paperless or import existing files from the hard drive. The scanned documents can be placed in files which you have to set out in advanced. Setting up the files for scanned documents is a fairly easy and quick.
Paperless has OCR (Optical character recognition) function which recognizes the text on the document and adds it to the Details Window. Your own notes and tags can also be added to the document. Paperless does not support reconstruction of the document after OCR. This function is available in more expensive Nuance’s Paperport software.
After scanning you can crop and rotate the documents in the scan dialogue. However, this can’t be done after the documents have been imported. It is possible to change the order of the existing pages as well as split and merge documents.
All documents can be viewed by the scanning date or by the collection. Paperless also has a calendar view. Of any collection you can create expense chart, table, pie or contact report.
A digital document is accepted by the IRS according to ruling Rev. Proc. 97-22. Therefore all your legal documents can be archived with Paperless.
Pros:
+Affordable price
+Works seamlessly with Fujitsu ScanSnap line
+Has all the necessary features for a typical user
Cons:
-OCR does not reconstruct documents

Mariner Software StoryMill Review
That's what happens when you write a complicated, detail-necessary work! How do I get organized? How do I make it easy to find my ideas without a ton of Word files in my research folder? I'm still trying to find a good solution that works for me, and during this process, I've come across quite a few writing tools that sound interesting. The first one on the list:
StoryMill.
StoryMill is one of a few software packages by Mariner Software that work to help writers. While StoryMill is dedicated to various aspects of overall novel writing, Persona (character management) and Contour (story outline) are two other options that focus on specific areas of novel development. I'll be honest: Contour is not something I'll try because I am not the type of writer who outlines in any detail whatsoever. I have a general idea, pit stops along the way, and an endgame; however, my characters direct me better than any outline I've ever done. In other words, you won't see a review of it here because it won't be unbiased. With that being said, Persona is on my list because it has what I wished StoryMill did for characters: detail, detail, detail!
![]() |
Character Screen |
It does have some simple planning features that make Contour unnecessary for many writers. The main screen for "Scenes" gives you a list of your scenes and the ability to pull up a timeline of your novel's scenes:
![]() |
Scene Main Screen |
![]() |
Individual Scenes |
When going back and adding the information for my novel, the most helpful parts for me were the chapter, date, and time. I was able to get a timeline going and really think about the amount of time that was passing in each scene and how plausible certain things were in the scheme of that time frame. On the other hand, the timeline feature is only so helpful. Rather than stacking scenes chronologically for each date, everything falls in a line to scroll horizontally no matter how short of a time frame you select.

There are a lot of small features having to do with formatting, exporting, etc., but they are what you would expect from writing software. A few mop-up features of interest:
- Word Frequency - See how many times you use certain words in each chapter or the novel overall.
- Progress Meter - Set a word count goal and you'll see a meter at the top of the screen that shows your progress to the selected goal. It can be progress for the current session or the whole novel's completion.
- Highlight Cliches - Find possible cliches in your writing.
- Snapshot - Take a snapshot of your work before you make big edits or changes.
You can use any of these 4 coupons in Mariners online store and save between 5% and 25% off the retail price of new purchases or one of the 5 pack bundles.

Twin Cities entrepreneur seeks a uneeq marketing approach
Does the Internet need another tech-retail site with gadgets and software for sale? Michael Wray thinks so -- provided such a site is unique.
The Minneapolis man this week is launching Uneeq, a tech-retail site he hopes eventually will impress geekier consumers with an interest in offbeat gizmos and software at often steep discounts.
It's early days for Uneeq, however. The site still doesn't have much of an inventory. Its initial marquee offering is a Macintosh-software "bundle" with eight titles for a combined cost of about $30, which would usually sell for $228 or so.
Other software options include a pair of Smile Software apps for the Macintosh, PDFPen and TextExpander. Hardware offerings include an assortment of Touchfire-branded keyboard cases for Apple iPad tablets, along with an emergency flashlight and several device-charging products.
That's pretty much it.
Wray, a veteran Apple-software retailer, said he is not concerned about eventually getting Uneeq's product selection fleshed out.
Wray said he ran into a not-unexpected problem: Convincing the makers of tech products to ally themselves with a site that didn't yet exist. Now that Uneeq is live on the Web, he is confident that he'll have more vendors soon.
Wray's reputation will surely help. He's been operating Minneapolis-based Mariner Software for more than a decade, and the company itself goes back a quarter-century. Wray's role at Mariner continues, but he said he hungered to start something new.
To that end, he has entirely "bootstrapped" the Uneeq venture himself, in a collaboration with his Mariner Software business partner Dusty Fields. So far, he hasn't needed venture capital or angel investors.
"I was able to call in some favors from friends and associates" for marketing, business-strategy and technical assistance, he said. "No money, though. Starting a company doesn't necessarily need to be an expensive venture, if you know what you are doing."
For Wray, Uneeq "has been an itch that needed scratching, to launch something other than a software company." Wray anticipates the company will become largely a tech-gadget purveyor with an Apple-centric, young-adult male clientele.
At the same time, Uneeq is following the time-honored tradition of offering software bundles -- sets of complementary apps sold together at sharp discounts, often with hugely successful results.
The Mac-software bundle now on Uneeq's home page is a sign of what is likely to come, Wray said.
