Wineskin Pro 2.0 released with OS X 10.7 Lion support

The Bordeaux Technology Group released Wineskin Pro 2.0 today. Wineskin Pro 2.0 is our initial release of Wineskin for Intel based Mac computers. This release has a custom built Xquartz X11 server that Microsoft Windows Games require to run in full screen mode. We also provide binary Wine builds as well as binary CodeWeavers CrossOver builds from their public source code. Wineskin Pro also comes with Graphical tools to assist you in installing and configuring Wine as well as building your own custom Wine builds from source.

Wineskin Pro 2.0 will run on any Intel Mac computer with OS X 10.5 or higher installed. This released has also been tested on the upcoming OS X 10.7 Lion release.
The cost of Wineskin Pro 2.0 is $29.95 and comes with six months of upgrades and support.
Supported Applications/Games:

At this time we don't offer support on a per Game or per Application basis, the best way to know if a application or game will run with Wineskin Pro is to take a look at the public Wine AppDB at WineHQ. With Wineskin Pro you can have multiple Wine versions installed at one time, so if a new Wine release fixes one Game and breaks another you can still play both of your Games with Wineskin Pro!

About Wineskin Pro:
Wineskin is a tool used to make wrappers to run Windows software on Mac OS X. The wrappers are in the form of a normal Mac Application, which can be double clicked and ran just like its native. They can also be used to make a distributable port of software. You do not need the Windows program's source code, you can attempt to port any program you want.
With Wineskin Pro you will receive basic support for installing and configuring the Wineskin Application. We will also answer questions about installing engines and configuring wrappers, and in the near future provide custom engines that have been tested to work with today's most popular Games.

Unlike other solutions you can have multiple engines (Wine versions) installed at one time, so if your favorite game runs in that engine you don't have to worry about it breaking in a future Wine release.

About Bordeaux:
The Bordeaux Technology Group is a software services and development company specializing in Windows compatibility software. Users of Linux, BSD, OpenSolaris and Mac systems from time to time find themselves in the need to run specialized Windows software. The Bordeaux suite enables access to these programs and data in a seamless and low cost manner without requiring licensing of Microsoft Technology. The Bordeaux Group also provides migration services and support for alternative operating systems specializing in Windows compatibility.

There is a multitude of software developed only for the Windows operating system and even when software vendors port their applications to another platform, generally it lacks features that the Windows version contains. The only solution these developers face is to have access to both systems for testing which leads to increased infrastructure demands, and wasted project resources. If you are vendor interested in supporting your application on Linux, BSD, OpenSolaris or Mac OS X or a software user that needs to run a Windows application on Linux, BSD, OpenSolaris or Mac OS X we can help.
Version 2.0 New Features:
  • Initial Public Release
  • Custom built Xquartz X11 server
We use PayPal as our preferred payment provider, with PayPal you do not need an account to make a transaction simply select to pay via credit card, its very simple and fast.

winetricks alpha 20110306 has been released

Dan Kegel has released WineTricks 20110306
Another fortnight, another Winetricks.

Version 20110306-alpha has a slightly cleaned up gui,
a handful of bugfixes and sha1sum updates,
eight new games (crysis2_demo_mp, diablo2, dragonage,
masseffect2_demo, penpenxmas, rayman2_demo, sammax301_demo, and secondlife),
one new dll (dinput),
and one new setting (vd=640x480).
It removes ie68, which is no longer needed, now that ie8 works.

It isolates all apps in their own wineprefix by default now, not just games. The option --isolate-games is gone, and a new option --no-isolate was added. And finally, it's not quite as slow at putting up menus.

Changes since 20110222:

  • Update disk space & time install requirements
  • diablo2: waiting for updater window isn't enough, you have to wait for it to say it's finished!
  • Cope with empty USERNAME, which happens when using startx.
  • hegemony_gold: updated sha1sum
  • Added 'folder' verb to open current wineprefix with xdg-open
  • Show title of installed app rather than absolute path in comment at top, give example of how to install all prereqs
  • firefox: update to 3.6.15, fix system menu.
  • corefonts: Trebuc filenames have mixed case. Fixes bug winezeug-203.
  • Install apps and benchmarks into their own prefixes, too. Show prefix name uniformly in window title. Move ie to dlls, call dlls 'Windows
  • dlls or components'.
  • Add option --no-isolate-games, make --isolate-games the default
  • annihilate: actually ask permission before annihilating the wineprefix.
  • gta_vc: ported, updated.
  • Better fix for bug winezeug-25, should fix new bug winezeug-229
  • w_download: fix progress indicator gui for locales that use , as a decimal separator. Pointed out by kmiksi. Fixes bug winezeug-232.
  • Add a paragraph at the top about what tools this script uses.
  • Cleaned up comments at top. Moved version ID to very top.
  • vc2005trial: update workarounds for wine-1.3.15
  • Last changeset was missing wildcards on two patterns
  • Speed up common case of w_pathconv -u 3x by writing it in shell. Suggestion by Christian Storgaard.
  • rayman2_demo: new verb. Based on a patch by Shannon.
  • Make --optout take effect earlier.
  • winetricks_stats_init: always quote W_CACHE
  • dinput: new verb by Shannon, for winehq bug 21159
  • vd=640x480: new verb, by Shannon
  • diablo2: ported and updated. (Next up: diablo2bc, battle chest version.)
  • crysis2_demo_mp: fix non-q mode, use SetWinDelay to simplify. Patch by Phil.
  • W_CACHE_WIN should just be a drive letter and colon in wine penpenxmas: new verb (based on a patch by Manpreet Sangha)
  • crysis2_demo_mp: new verb by Austin
  • sammax301_demo: new verb by Phil
  • secondlife: ported and updated
  • w_download: autohotkey's download server doesn't like curl's user agent, so use a more common one
  • masseffect2_demo: partly fix windows install. (Clicks still not working.)
  • w_mount: Port support for windows mounts of iso volumes.
  • winetricks_read_volume_name: hexdump is not portable, use od instead
  • w_read_key: create directory before storing key
  • sims3: update to latest version, mention drm problem as showstopper
  • masseffect2: mark as broken drm.
  • masseffect2, masseffect2_demo: move workaround descriptions into
  • w_workaround arg.
  • masseffect2_demo: port verb
  • firefox4: updated to beta12
  • dragonage: ported verb. Flickers terribly in movies for me :-(
  • osmos_demo: bug 24416 fixed in 1.3.8
  • w_warn: in -q mode, time out after 5 seconds.
  • Get rid of debug print.
  • sims3: if we want menus to work, we have to install dotnet20.
  • Move sudo detect after gui detect; fixes running winetricks-alpha from system menu
  • ie68: no longer needed, now that ie8 works
  • w_warn: text passed to zenity must be escaped
  • ie8: make -q not fail install test.
  • Fix --gui option, which was ignored because variable was reset after option was processed
  • winetricks_set_wineprefix: Comment out debug print
  • annihilate: only delete .desktop files.
  • Use localized name for Desktop directory.
  • Move silent option to top level menu
  • ie8: set TabProcGrowth=0 to avoid hang. Fixes winezeug bug 159. Thanks to MatthiasLichter.
  • Fix running on cygwin (W_DRIVE_C was wrong)

A Introduction to Bordeaux 2011.03 for Linux FreeBSD and PC BSD

The upcoming Bordeaux for Linux and BSD 2011.03 release will see a major shift in how the program is written and the new features that will be available to current and future Bordeaux customers. This is a brief introduction to explain some of the many planned features that will be available in the upcoming Bordeaux 2011.03 release.

The first major change is the Bordeaux 2011.03 GUI has been rewritten from scratch in Gambas, and requires the Gambas 2.15.2 runtime libraries or higher to be installed to function correctly. You can easily install Gambas in Linux from Synaptic or Yum or by going to the Gambas site and downloading a binary or the source code. Gambas for FreeBSD and PC-BSD can be installed through a ports install. If you have PC-BSD you will need to install ports if you haven't already done so.

Here is a quick overview of the upcoming changes :
  • We now have 45 Games and Benchmarks that can be easily installed via Bordeaux.
  • Cellars e.g wineprefixes can now be easily made from a GUI Cellar maker.
  • Winetricks has been split up into categories, so its easier to find what you want quickly.
  • You can now explore a Cellar with the built in Explorer. In the future we will add the ability to run a application or game directly from the explorer.
  • We now have a built in update manager, updates will be simple and easy.
  • You can now delete, backup, import and export Cellars to different machines with ease. Or just backup and restore on your stand alone computer.
  • Unsupported applications can be easily installed and configured.
This introduction is just a overview of the many options Bordeaux 2011.03 and beyond will have, one area not covered here is the planned font configuration options that we are currently working on.

Pricing for Bordeaux 2011.03 will remain the same at only $20.00 per license. At this time Bordeaux is on sale for 50% off and this sale will end when we ship the upcoming 2011.03 release. So if you want to get Bordeaux while its still on sale and upgrade to 2011.03 once it has been released this is the best time to do it. Also, keep in mind you get six months of upgrades with your purchase.

Screenshots and descriptions :

This is the new Bordeaux Splash Screen that shows when you first start Bordeaux.

The software tab is the default view when Bordeaux starts, from here you can select the default applications to install. Just select a application and then next to proceed. In this screenshot you can only see about half of the default applications. A full list will be provided when we ship Bordeaux 2011.03

After you select the application you want to install and then next you are taken to the setup page. where you can select the default install or even modify the install if you wish.

Next is the Games Tab where we have benchmarks and Games with default installs, you can also modify the default install and make changes if you wish. At this time we have 45 Games and Benchmarks listed and plan to add more in the future.

In the Multimedia Tab you can install Multimedia components like video codecs and Microsoft DirectX into a Cellar.

In the Dlls Tab we have a large range of Microsoft Dlls that can be installed into a Cellar as well as color profiles.

In the Fonts Tab you can install a large range of Windows fonts into a Cellar.

In the Development Tab we have Microsoft Windows Development tools that can be installed into a default Cellar or a Cellar of your choice.

It is now drop dead simple to install unsupported applications or games in Wine with Bordeaux. You can install components into a cellar and then install the application or game into that same cellar. Select the Windows version, and name the cellar to your liking. After your Application or Game is installed just go to the Manage Wine Tab and you can easily make additional changes via regedit or winecfg.

After you install some of the supported applications or games you can select the top Wine Cellar tab and then view the cellar. From here you can delete, clone or backup a Cellar.

You can go to the Explorer tab and explore a cellar's contents. just double click on the Cellar you wish to explore.

You can also clone or backup a cellar, and then export it to another PC or restore it at a later date. Import copies the backup to the backup folder import + restore imports backup and restores to a cellar. Export allows you to save/download and move backups elsewhere.

The manage Wine tab list all the builtin Wine tools so you can modify a Cellar to your liking, run regedit and tweak the registry settings, or winecfg and set the most common settings. You can run any of the builtin tools or games from the cellar of your choice, just select the Cellar from the drop down menu.

Here is a screenshot of the drop down menu and the programs that I currently have installed with Bordeaux 2011.03 at this time.

This is a screenshot of the About tab, where you can see a full changelog or check for updates.

In the future upgrading Bordeaux will be as simple as a couple mouse clicks. When new updates are available all you have to do is check and then install the update and your set. It's that simple...

When your ready to exit Bordeaux you can do a full exit or keep Bordeaux in the system tray for easy access. If you choose the system tray, just click the Bordeaux icon and Bordeaux will be ready for use instantly.

Please keep in mind this is just a brief overview of Bordeaux 2011.03 and more features are planned for this release and future releases. If you would like to support this release please consider making a purchase or donation today.

CrossOver Impersonator simplifies running Windows software on Mac and Linux

CodeWeavers Inc has released a major new version of its Wine based CrossOver tool, which is designed to make it possible to run Windows applications and games on both Mac and Linux platforms. CrossOver Impersonator Edition boasts a brand new CrossTie feature, which enables users to install hundreds of Windows applications with a single click. It also incorporates over 4,500 patches that went into the latest release of Wine (1.3.9), and replaces all previous versions.

CrossOver is based on the open-source Wine software which CodeWeavers contributes a massive amount of code to. Wine works by isolating programs in bottles, each complete with its own C drive (including all sub-directories), Windows Registry, Wine settings and of course all the application files. Separate bottles can be created to isolate programs from each other or for setting up different versions of Windows for compatibility purposes. CrossOver Impersonator provides a more user-friendly front end and support, albeit in return for a commercial fee.

Previous versions of CrossOver as well as Wine itself require the user to manually configure a bottle and then install the software within that; CrossTie technology now makes it an easy process: after first launching the program will connect to the CrossWeavers application compatibility database and provide a list of supported software. All you need to do is provide the setup file, then the software will do the rest it’ll automatically detect set-up discs and then it’s a case of following the exact same setup wizard as you’d get if installing the program in Windows. There are over 450 applications and games currently supported in the database, including various older versions of major applications like Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Office.

There are three editions of CrossOver Impersonator for both Mac and Linux Platforms: CrossOver Mac/Linux Impersonator Standard and CrossOver Games Impersonator cost $39.95 each, and come with six months’ free updates and support. The third option CrossOver Mac/Linux Impersonator Professional costs $69.95, comes with 12 months updates and higher priority support, and includes a CrossOver Games licence. Professional users can also renew for an additional 12 months for a discounted cost ($35) up to 30 days after their license expires.

CrossOver Impersonator requires a Mac with an Intel processor running Mac OS X 10.5 or later, while it will also work on most major Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, Redhat, Fedora and openSUSE.

CodeWeavers unleashes new Windows Impersonator

CrossOver Impersonator, a Windows emulator, promises high performance for Unix/Linux systems. With Wine 1.3.9 under the hood, it raises the question: what differentiates this Wine based program from any other? We ordered a copy to find out.
On first boot, CrossOver Linux presents the ability to automatically download the list of community-supported applications. If you turn on automatic updating, this list will be checked and updated each time you launch it.
Similar to PlayOn Linux or Cedega, you are shown a list of applications to choose from. Every applications running quality is measured with a medals system ranging from bronze, silver to gold.
Once an application is selected, you have the first option to simply direct CrossOver to the installer file. The second more interesting option is to select a folder that will be treated like an installer disk, saving you the trouble of mounting disk images.

The final step is to install the program selected. CrossOver offers a neat feature for installing applications into separate ‘bottles’. A bottle is a virtual Windows environment. Each bottle contains a unique C: drive. It also contains a complete Windows registry, a full set of most CrossOver settings, and one or more Windows applications.

The program allows you to maintain multiple bottles in one CrossOver installation. This is like having several different Windows machines operating together on your computer. This is is useful anytime you want to install multiple applications yet prevent them from interacting or damaging one another.

The last noteworthy feature is “CrossTie” installer. In a nutshell, this lets you install thousands of programs at the same time without any user input or configuration. To accomplish this task CrossOver contains all the configuration settings needed to create a new bottle and install the application you need into that bottle.

Download

You can download a free 30 day trial or buy the software here.
The standard version will run you 39.95$ and as for the professional 59.95$. All of the above are easily installed through a Deb. package.

CodeWeavers CrossOver ComeToTheLight sale has been extended

Codeweavers offers downloads of its Crossover Games for $39.95 and Crossover Professional for $69.95 but if you apply coupon code "ComeToTheLight" this will drop CrossOver Games to $29.96 And Crossover Professional to $52.46 That's 25% off the normal retail selling price.

Update 04/06/2023 : The ComeToTheLight dealcode has expired, you can now use "TOM23" as your dealcode and save 20% off CrossOver for Mac and Linux.

CrossOver enables you to install Windows applications and games on Intel-based Macs and Linux. CodeWeavers also has unsupported builds for FreeBSD and Solaris. To get the FreeBSD or Solaris build you will need to buy a Linux licence and then go to your downloads and select the unsupported tab.

The new and improved CodeWeavers CrossOver version 10.0.0 was recently released, So if you need a Windows Application or Games to run on Linux, Mac OS X, FreeBSD or Solaris this is your chance to get it at 20% off the normal selling price.

CrossOver 10.0.0 contains many fixes to existing applications, and just generally makes the product better. As of this writing CrossOver has been merged with Wine 1.3.9 and contains many improvements for Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office, Quicken, PhotoShop and many other supported and none supported applications. See below for the full changelog of changes in CrossOver 10.0.0 for Linux and Mac.

Second, and perhaps most important, the CrossOver installer will now be directly linked to their online Compatibility database and allow people to install unsupported software via (recipes) contained on the Compatibility Center. The recipes are now called CrossTie and have the .tie file extention.

Technically speaking, a CrossTie file is a formatted XML file. When you click on a CrossTie link in our Compatibility Database, you'll be prompted to download the the CrossTie file to your machine. After downloading the CrossTie file, on Mac you can drag and drop the CrossTie file onto the CrossOver icon, or double click on the CrossTie file to have CrossOver load the file.

On Linux you can double-click on the CrossTie file, right-click and choose "Open With-->Crossover", or if you're a command-line junky, you can open the file with :

$ ~/cxoffice/bin/cxinstaller installerfile.tie

CrossOver reads the XML 'recipe' and begins the installation process for the target application. The CrossTie file tells CrossOver everything it needs to know about how to install the target software package, how to detect if it is installed, and even how to determine what software package a given CD is for. CrossOver will also automatically understand all the dependencies, tweaks and settings that would be needed to make that application install and function to the best of its ability.

Here is a couple screenshots of the Crossover Professional 10.0 (UI) user interface.

Wineskin 2.0 RC2 has been released WS6 engines updates and Multiple Monitors support coming

Wineskin wrapper 2.0 RC2 along with WS6 engines are now up and available in Wineskin Winery 1.0 RC1. The Manual should have all current info correctly.

RC1 wrappers will not work right with WS6 engines... I also suggest not using WS5 engines in RC2
RC1 wrappers should be able to update, and change engines fine using Wineskin.app once you have downloaded them in Wineskin Winery.

Biggest changes...
True fullscreen support for gaming using Display Capturing, with a toggle to get in and out (Cmd+Opt+A)
Fixes for file associations, so you can open files with wrappers from Finder correctly even if the wrapper was already running.

Winetricks was updated to the Winetricks-alpha builds. Do not use the Update Winetricks button for now, or it will break Winetricks and you’ll need to replace Wineskin.app from a fresh wrapper to fix it.
WS6, Multiple Monitors...
I’ve had multiple inquiries about multi-monitor problems with WS6 engine bases.
I have this problem fixed in WineskinX11 (Xquartz for Wineskin) and am working on a few different related things... This will bump the current engine base up to WS7, where.. unless there is another major problem found, should be the last update to the engine base for a long while... which will help all the RCs get to release status faster!

I do not know when I will have WS7 stuff up, just depends how the changes and testing goes.
When WS7 is out, fullscreen gaming and handling multiple monitors should work great! Think of WS6 as a WS7beta :-)

I do not plan on having quick replacement changes like this once Wineskin 2.0 is at a release version.

CodeWeavers Releases CrossOver 10 for Linux and Mac aka the Impersonator

WEARING SEQUINS AND STILETTO HEELS, CODEWEAVERS DELIVERS DEATH BLOW TO MICROSOFT’S FASHION HEGEMONY
New CrossOver “Impersonator” Release Dramatically Increases Ease of Impersonating Windows on Mac and Linux

SAINT PAUL, Minn. (January 27, 2011) It’s Mac in the back; Windows in the front. Gadfly software company, CodeWeavers, Inc., today releases CrossOver Impersonator Edition. This latest edition greatly increases the ease of running Windows software on Macs and Linux PCs without the need for a Windows operating system license.
Impersonator Edition also includes CodeWeavers new “CrossTie” installer, which lets users install hundreds of Windows applications with just a click of a button. CrossTie communicates directly with CodeWeavers massive compatibility database (c4.codeweavers.com), which lists thousands of software applications including basic office packages, educational software and highly popular games that Windows-less individuals can now operate through Impersonator.
“One click on CrossTie and bam! users are set to run applications on their Mac or Linux machine,” said CodeWeavers CEO Jeremy White, fetchingly attired as the incomparable Lucille Ball, complete with stunning red wig. “Whether it’s the latest Steam game, some random knitting program or Microsoft Office, we put Windows’ lipstick on your Mac, quickly and guiltlessly.”
Both COO Jon Parshall and White dressed in drag as a shameless stunt to draw attention to themselves and their Impersonator software. David Pogue of the New York Times called it “hilarious,” and one of the most creative pitches he’d seen all year.
“CrossOver Impersonator is the diamond edition of our CrossOver software, and because of the improved functionality, anyone from an open source novice to a hard core gamer can easily use our software, all without paying a dime to Microsoft,” Parshall added. CodeWeavers COO, complete with Cher wig and towering black heels, will be unveiling the new software at Macworld 2011 in San Francisco. “Impersonator delivers the death blow to Microsoft’s fashion dominance. So be there, or be Cher!”
CrossOver Impersonator Edition replaces all previous versions of CrossOver. The software is immediately available at www.CodeWeavers.com.

All dressed up and MacWorld to go

From Jeremy Whites blog :
These days, the combination of CrossOver and all the hard work of our Advocates is amazing. Within 5 minutes, or less, you can easily download and install CrossOver and your favorite Windows application. But you don't have to buy, install, or hassle with Windows. It's like playing a game like Call of Duty without having to actually be in a real combat zone. Or like a man putting on a dress instead of getting a sex change operation. Feels a little funny, but strangely nice, and you still get to be a man afterwards.

So in 8 days, at MacWorld in San Francisco, we are launching CrossOver 10 'The Impersonator'. This new version of CrossOver will feature our new CrossTie technology that will make it drop dead easy to install a Windows application and only that Windows application - on your Mac or Linux computer. And since we're so excited about this, we're telling everyone we know, including our buddies David Pogue and Walt Mossberg, who ignore us every single freaking year (not that we're hurt or anything, mind you).

Click on the picture above to see what I mean about a dress. And if you're in San Francisco next week, come on down to booth 442 at MacWorld; we'll have real Impersonators on hand, and you can check out the new Impersonator version of CrossOver. Or check this space next week for our launch.

Cheers,

Jeremy

winetricks 20110105 and 20110105 alpha has been released with 35 games added

New winetricks 20110105: improved download error recovery, added first-run optin dialog. New winetricks 20110105-alpha: menu divided into categories, added 35 games.
Another month, another Winetricks - or, rather, two new Winetricks.

Dan Kegel released winetricks 20110105 today. New version 20110105 has only two notable changes:
1. it will retry a corrupt download for you (this should get rid of most cryptic warnings about needing to rename a file and retry),

2. a first run dialog now asks whether you would like to help winetricks development by reporting usage stats. You should only see this dialog once (and only if you're using the gui, and only if you're using zenity). This has been very helpful already, as people have been running it from svn. Please let me know what you think of it.
Experimental new version 20110105-alpha has a few further changes:
3. The menu is now broken up by category; there is now a top-level menu which gives you a choice of category (dll, font, app, or setting). This ought to make the menu a little less overwhelming. Let me know what you think of the new menu navigation.
4. There's now a progress dialog during downloads in gui mode.
5. It should work better when the user has removed the Z: drive.
6. Its been refactored to make adding new verbs much easier (you no longer have to edit the script in multiple places to add a verb, and you can even put verbs in external files).
7. Added 35 games. (A bunch more remain to be ported from wisotool.)
8. Removed (or, rather, haven't ported yet) a number of less-common verbs. The statistics gathered by the new version will tell us which of the remaining verbs to port first.
Changes in version 20110105:

Dan Kegel:
  • remove old synonym dotnet2 for dotnet20
  • mpc: remove broken call to append_path
  • handle 'winetricks win31 vista' properly
  • make dotnet20sp2 warn that it's broken. Don't list in menu.
  • w_download: don't redownload if no expected checksum given. Also remove == typo from r2207.
  • don't declare checksum error unless, you know, there was a checsum error as favor for etersoft, avoid referring directly to zenity/kdialo /xmssage to avoid pulling them all in as dependencies when building a package
  • automatically retry download once if cached file has wrong checksum
  • ie8: avoid writing to / (just like ie7 fix). Don't bother running ie8 when finished; point user to workaround instead. Also move a verb that got sandwiched between ie6 and ie7.
  • ie7: when / is writable as on macosx, move z: out of the way during ie7 install to avoid scribbling temporary files in /. Had to run with WINEDEBUG=warn+heap to avoid memory bugs in setupapi? when reporting usage, also report version.
  • in zenity gui case, ask user on first run whether to opt in to usage reporting.
  • on MacOS X, put cache in /home/dank/Library/Caches
  • delete msxml6.dll before running installer. Fixes bug 211.
  • tahoma: don't download to top of cache
  • finish renaming WINETRICKS_UNIXQUIET to W_UNATTENDED_DASH_Q
  • make cabextract quiet
Austin English:
  • add win31 verb (needed internally by ole2)

CodeWeavers And Linsoft Announce Linsofts 10 Year Anniversary Sale

CODEWEAVERS AND LINSOFT ANNOUNCE LINSOFT’S 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY SALE
To Celebrate LinSoft’s 10th year in business, CrossOver Linux will be provided FREE on all LinSoft PCs until January 31st, 2011

SAINT PAUL, Minn. (December 24, 2010) — CodeWeavers, Inc. and LinSoft GmbH (www.linsoft.de), leading providers of open-source systems and tools, announced today their joint participation in LinSoft’s 10th Anniversary Sale. Effective today until January 31st, 2011, LinSoft will be providing a free license of CrossOver Linux Standard on every LinSoft Linux PC. But now it’s becoming increasing user-friendly as well. Tools like CrossOver provide Linux desktop users with a great user experience.”

Conveniently timed around the Christmas holiday, Poths noted further, “This offer makes a great Christmas present, or even an after-Christmas present, if Santa hasn’t brought you a Linux PC down the chimney.”

CodeWeavers CrossOver Multi-User Pricing Discounts save up to 43% off full retail

With the recent announcement that the Russian government will mandate A shift from Microsoft to Linux by 2015. I started thinking about what the Russians will do if they have some Windows Applications that don't have Linux equivalents at this time.

One option would be to keep some Microsoft Windows boxes around to run a small number of critical applications. Another option would be for the government to fund the development or porting of the needed applications to Linux. A third option would be they could run the applications on CodeWeavers CrossOver Pro on Linux and save the Windows licences and any development or porting cost.

This isn't just for Russia, this is also true for many other countries around the world that's making the shift away from Microsoft Windows to Linux.

Then their is smaller state and local governments that are also making the shift to Linux. And for smaller governments the cost to develop or to port a custom application to Linux might be prohibitive. But with the purchase of volume CrossOver licences the cost would remain within budget. As the local government would save the cost of the Windows licence that's allot more expensive then the cost of CrossOver.

Next is educational institutions, have you ever thought how much the worlds educational institutions would save by making the move away from Windows to Linux? And how the savings could be used for actually educating our children and young adults.

Then their is the power user who has two or more computers that run Linux or Mac and who wants the option to run certain windows applications or games on their operating system of choice. With a volume purchase of two or more licences you can receive a discount off the full retail price.

Lastly I would suggest LUG users or people who have friends who also use Linux or Mac to setup a home brew Groupon. And one person take every ones order and then make the volume purchase for the discounted price. This way everyone in the group gets a higher discount as more licences can be purchased at a single time.

So how does volume licensing work?

For example if you purchase 2 to 9 licenses you will receive a 5.6% discount off the normal retail selling price of $69.95 and as you can see in the table below the more licenses you purchase in a single block the higher the discount received. The maximum discount goes up to 43% off retail for 1000 or more licenses purchased at a single time. While a $40,000 purchase might seem like allot to a single user, this is well within range of normal software purchases for large business, educational intuitions, and government of all sizes.
