Wine colour and theme support

Have you ever gotten annoyed by Wine/Cedega/CXOffice not matching to your otherwise pretty desktop? It is possiable to change the Wine color scheme to closely match your default desktop colors. You can even install a large varity of themes and have Wine use them to make your favorite applications look even better.

Using Theme/Skins

Firstly go into Wine's virtual drive, which is usually ".wine/drive_c" in your Home directory if you don't see .wine in your home directory then it must be hidden, select View->Show Hidden Files in the file manager. Inside this directory go into the "windows" folder then make a new folder in there called "Themes". Inside here you should make a directory for each theme you want, and put the files ending in ".msstyles" directly into them.

Next you need to tell Wine to use your theme, so run winecfg. In the configuration window select the tab "Desktop Integration" and select the "Theme:" box, which should now have your theme in it's menu. After selecting the theme click "Apply" at the bottom to see how it looks (some themes don't always display properly), then if you are happy click "OK" and your done.

You need to be aware that running some of the more complex themes may result in a major slowdown to Wine. Performance will depend on the theme you select, and your system specifications.

Colour Managment

There are a couple different ways to manage Wine colours, the easiest is to run winecfg and select the tab "Desktop Integration" just as you would with installing a theme. Next select "Item" and choose a item from the drop down list and then click on Color and choose a colour from the provided palette.

Another option is to edit your user.reg registry file found within your .wine directory. You will need to open it with your favorite text editor and find the line which looks like [Control Panel\Colors] some numbers.

And add a colour theme that has already been created... The great thing about colour theaming is you will not see any performance degradation. Your applications will run at the same speed as before, accept now with your preferred colours!

Below is some colour themes that you may find of use. To add the theme just paste the theme under your [Control Panel\Colors] line.
