EVE Online Linux support ends, the news was handed down today from the EVE Online site.

Hello,

My name is Arend Stührmann, also known as CCP Whisper, and I am the producer in charge of the project bringing EVE Online to the Mac and Linux operating systems. As you may know, we have been working in partnership with Transgaming Technologies, utilizing their Cider engine to allow EVE Online to run on the Mac OS and their Cedega engine to enable operation under Linux. This project went live in late 2007 and in that time we have seen the same slow, steady growth in the numbers of users of the Mac client that has characterized the growth of EVE Online throughout its history. However we have not seen a similar growth in the numbers using our Linux client.

It is for this reason that I am sorry to have to announce that from the 10th of March onwards CCP will no longer be officially supporting the Linux operating system. The low amount of users of the Linux client did not justify the degree of additional complexity having three operating systems imposes on our development and release schedules. There is the matter of maintaining the hardware infrastructure to facilitate the development work, spending man-hours on testing and diagnosing faults in the client as well as regression testing. While we did embark on this project with the aim of being one of the few MMOG’s on the market offering a game client for all of the major operating system architectures, we feel that the time and resources that were being spent on the Linux client would be better utilized in areas where more players would benefit from them.

I would like to thank you for your past support of our efforts to bring EVE to the Linux OS. The feedback and commitment we obtained from players like you helped both CCP and Transgaming with our attempts to improve on the quality and stability of the client. Many of us in CCP use Linux and are convinced of its merits as an operating system.

Should you wish to continue playing EVE Online under Linux there are several options available. Some of these are free and some require purchase of software. A selection of these is at the bottom of this e-mail along with basic instructions on how to use EVE Online through them. If you wish to stop playing EVE Online and want to request a refund of unused game time, please contact our billing department by filing a petition in the billing category. They will assist you in obtaining a refund for the remaining game time and closing your account.

Again, thank-you for your support,

Arend Stührmann
Associate Producer

The EVE client for Linux was frankly - a piece of crap.
Wine always did a better job than the
horrible thing Transgaming hacked together.

I would like to know this - given the amount of people
on Linux who use the nice Premium (or standard) Windows clients under Wine, would they be willing to
extend some help towards the Wine project if there was a serious issue?

If so then we would be in a
better situation than we ever were when there was an official Linux client!
no root password
aproncio 2009-02-09 03:46:57

i don't gonna install a software that asks about my root password, that's the reason why there are
no linux users in your site.

unix users are not suicidal persons.

Dan Kegel 2009-02-09 10:44:20

Wait, what asked for root password?
Tom Wickline 2009-02-09 10:48:10

I dont know, i think he's talking about the Cedega based installer they used.. Cant be about this
site :)
root password and EVE
Sarah 2009-02-09 12:26:04

The Cegeda client, if doing a system wide installation required the root password as it would write
to /(s)bin and /etc. And anyone that trusts it enough to let it do that is as daft as you think they
are. I also second the 'piece of crap' comment, the Cegeda client was flaky, unwieldy and quite
frankly slow compared to either WINE or Windows; even when not using the premium shader model 3
content. The fact that people had the client bomb out in the middle of PvP didn't help either.

To be honest the Cegeda client for the Mac is equally rubbish, having been promised premium
content at the beginning of 2008 we're now looking at March 2009 as a maybe for it to appear. None
of us are holding our breath on that one. Which is fine, except that some people have had Premium
working in CrossOver for quite a while and AFIC the Darwine builds have run it. Not that I can use
either on my HAckintosh... drat.

I'm surprised CCP have kept Transgaming around to be honest,
they've consitently failed to deliver.
Your short sightedness is your profit loss.
Tarunil 2009-02-09 14:13:24

After watching a good portion of the EVE tournaments yesterday. Decided to give the 14 free trial a
go. Created an account and all that, was pleased to see Linux links. But that pleasure quickly went
sour upon seeing I needed this Cedega crap. Not all that long ago I gave Cedega a whirl..... was not
impressed. Did some more researching and starting finding links about the Linux client via cedega to
be crap. My pleasure was starting to evaporate quickly.

Now I am reading this article you guys are
going to drop Linux support. well screw you then. The free trail account will expire, and you will
never have me as a player.

Has it ever occurred to you reason Linux users are at the low end of
users is due to such a crappy ass client? If you spent half the effort to making a good Linux client
as trying to avoid REALLY MAKING a good one, you would not have lost me and my money.

But just
ignore this post, just as you do not realize, making a crappy client, and then blaming people for
NOT WANTING to use it, is typical bullshit thinking. And please, you can forget about the hoops you
listed above for me to jump through.

Wow! What an impressive tirade. As an equal opportunity operating system user, I am truly
embarrassed for the linux community on your behalf. In my experience, linux enthusiasts are not
hard-core gamers en masse, but focus more on practical endeavors. This would explain the lack of
widespread gaming options and support for companies who are attempting to make a profit. And,
making a profit just doesn't seem to be a priority for the linux community. I applaud that, but
wish that people such as yourself wouldn't sully the linux reputation with belligerence. It only
serves to make others wary of your brethren. Good luck, and I hope you find a good game to keep you
off the forums.
s.plisskin 2009-02-09 14:26:08

Canceled Eve Subscription.

I was looking forward to better Gnu/Linux support as the Cedega clinet
was garbage. No wonder they noticed hardly anyone using it. I wonder, do they keep track of people
using the windows client running under Gnu/Linux OS?

Either way i'm out.
Please send flames to EVE Online

This is not the EVE Online site, this is a Wine news site so please send all flames to the EVE Online forum. If you have A general comment like Sarah has above please feel free to post them here. But
if you want EVE online to know what you think, then it's best to post your comments in
their forum.
Goodbye EVE

EVE Online:

Good news for Linux users, as another clueless "community" of idiots has failed
in their really bad software project.

The problem with Linux is really bad software written by
clueless idiots (especially foreigners) who start "communities".

I'm sorry, but I will not
install any software from someone named "Arend Stahrmann" from the Soviet Union.

This is
America, and Americans do not trust foreigners or their worthless software.

You're Deleted,

Joe 2009-03-06 19:43:55

Hey, Hollywood dude, you fail.

It's "Arend Stührmann". Doesn't your copy/paste function
work?
And there is no 'Soviet Union'.

I did the Linux fanboy thing for a few years, and I got fed
up with the lack of support from major HW and SW vendors. I switched to Mac. They have about 20% of
the market -- and most of those are on the consumer side.

You can get nasty if you want, but that
won't help you. The tiny segment of the market you occupy is statistically insignificant. CCP gave
you guys a shot and you weren't biting. That's more than you can say for a lot of vendors.

You can
always go to 'Vendetta Online' -- I'm sure they will be making a grab from disgruntled Linux EO
players...
Mr Reagan?
Me 2010-06-23 05:59:39

Um, Linux isn't American either.
Actually although Apple are based in the states, Mac OS is mostly
not American... and I think parts of Windows are not American.
Oh and this is not America, it's the
internet, which as far as I can tell is not a country or affiliated to or controlled by any single
country.
Soviet Union?! WTF?

*note for idiots:
I do know what the Soviet Union was. I still say
"WTF?!".
Thank you
thegreatspace 2009-02-16 20:24:29

First of all, I want to thank you for all the hard work that your team and yourself went through to
even offer a Linux Client. Many had complaints. I for one have to say, the fact that CCP even
thought of Linux was a blessing. I know that there are many LINUX users out there, including
myself, that are extremely disappointed that CCP has decided to take this route. My bigger concern
is that as time moves on, that CCP does not decide to take in code that could not be use by WINE
users. Since I see that CCP is, at this point, going to continue with supporting MAC OS X,
hopefully not. I don't know if your jobs have been affected by this decision, for yourself and your
team, and it is my hope that it has not. I never had problems with the LINUX client, and it ran
extremely smooth, although it was in classical. I do have a 64 bit machine, custom built however,
with memory above and beyond the norm, so I don't know if that made a difference.

Either which
way, thank you for your hard work. It was not your decision to drop Linux, it was CCP's decision and
not yours, I think that there are LINUX users that are taking this personally, and personal attacks
are uncalled for. Either which way, thank you again, and if you continue to keep us updated, with
any hints and trics in installs and functionality, that would be great.
A step in the right direction
rsol 2009-03-08 01:12:25

its not actually as bad as you think guys. We all know that wine is almost there when it comes to
windows gaming. Its not long now. I think the cedega version of wine was so far out of date it was
just silly. If you follow the instructions laid out, playing on linux with premium setting WORKS.
DirectX has been a poisoned pill in windows ever since its inception. Microsoft knew what they were
doing when they made this. OpenGL was fine and with the amount of support directx is afforded, would
be in a very different place it is now. Please dont blame software houses for the weather. They just
go with the flow. WE bought Directx games.

With eve now being "up to date" with wine we
have a chance to petition them to try to help us out more. IF they know that we have been using wine
for quite some time already they might realize that windows and mac arent the only kids on the
block. I ve been using the premium client on wine for ages now. I told the guys on eve online
because i found it ran better than the linux client. So, if you want to blame anyone, blame me:)

I
shall continue to discuss options with them about making it easier to install. I will be asking if
they can contact wine-doors and playonlinux so they can help make the install easier. This is the
best option for us all to go.
mdubb 2009-03-16 18:02:14

I was contemplating giving up Windows just now, and going with Linux, and this thread has totally
changed my mind. Maybe MS is an evil corporation that cornered the games and apps market, but who
cares. I wanna be able to run anything I want, whenever I want, with the best performance my
hardware can get me. That means Windows. If running Linux means I'll have to dual boot, or wade
through blogs full of fanbois trying to find out how to use some crap emulation to run my games and
apps, I think I'll pass. Linux is free, and it's nicely done, but the OS is there to sit in the
background while my stuff runs. I don't think the personal satisfaction I'd have knowing I stuck it
to the man by using a free, open-sourced OS, would make me feel much better when I'm crashing in the
middle of a fleet battle.
J Schultheis 2009-03-26 19:56:48

I am a Linux user. I am an EVE player. I would like to take a moment to thank Wine for making many
programs available to me.

I am also a Mac user. I did not need the use of wine for EVE on the
Mac.

It has been a fun game, but as my gaming system is Ubuntu, and my MacBook Pro is not my
gaming system, I will be discontinuing playing EVE.

Through all of this I am led to ask: What are
the people at CCP thinking???
It seems their numbers were based on how many users were steadily
increasing on CEDEGA... Every Linux gamer knows that Cedega used open-source code to then privatize
and charge subscriptions just to provide a slow and choppy gaming platform after all. And why would
people supporting open-source code (like myself) pay the rip-off artist (namely:Cedega)? And then
for CCP to discontinue support for EVE due to this crap-a*s Cedega who ripped Wine and all Linux
users anyway...

Tell ya what, Wine still has it going on, and things are only getting better.

CCP, you can't possibly know how many Linux users you have, as nobody really knows how many Linux
users there are...

Wine: Props!
CCP: Tsk Tsk
Cedega: Rot in Hell
Windows: Show Cedega the way
Anksa 2009-04-02 18:26:16

Who was using the Cedega client anyway when EVE was running on WINE? No big news here or anything
to get upset about. I think it's great CCP finally ditched Cedega becuase it was a ripped off from
WINE and wasn't as good either.
Another Sad Linux User
Spikes2020 2009-05-10 04:32:55

I used windows until i got my new computer and had to go buy vista (i7) to run it.... $200 no thank
you. So i swapped to Linux knowing that the only game i like would be support Linux. Now i read your
dumping cedega, "well about fu**ing time!" support Wine! they have come twice as far, for
what, because they love the game, not for money.

I am not going to go back to windows, i currently
have 2 accounts on EvE online and love the game. I wont quit until the game is unplayable in
Linux.

I feel that this is going to be the trend for some players as windows OS only increase in
price and eve players learn that their are other cheaper means to run a computer.

Nvidia supports
Linux so can CCP!!!
To all you Linux guys quitting EVE...
Guyblin 2009-10-13 05:54:27
