Canonical to bundle CodeWeavers CrossOver? PDF Print E-mail

In a official post on the Ubuntu Forums, user Matthew Helmke asks users to complete a survey with the applications they would like to see in the upcoming versions of Ubuntu.

Among the applications one can find: Spotify, Pandora, Hulu, Skype, WoW, Picasa, Adobe Photoshop, Apple iTunes, CodeWeavers and a couple more applications.

I'm wondering if Canonical has plans to bundle CodeWeavers CrossOver with forthcoming releases? Most of the applications CodeWeavers already supports and the one or two apps they don't officially support will already run as Unsupported apps in CrossOver now. The only change would be for CodeWeavers to officially support the apps in a upcoming release.

So ask people what Apps/Games they would like to see running on Ubuntu then ask if they would also use Codeweavers..... I suppose if enough people say YES to the CodeWeavers question we just might see a bundle between the two companies.

Here is is the post, and link to the survey :

Please help the Canonical and Ubuntu leadership

We are trying to gather preferences for the apps that users would like to see in upcoming version of Ubuntu. While we all believe in the power of open source applications we are also very keen that users should get to choose the software they want to use. There are some great apps that aren't yet available to Ubuntu users and Canonical would like to know the priority that users would like to see them. This list is indicative not definitive and we would love to also read your suggestions in the free text box.

Please take the survey here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/GFVQP62

They are also requesting that anyone who has comments please do so here.

Note: there has been some confusion that I would like to clear up--this is not about applications to be included by default, but merely things that we may attempt to make more easily available for Ubuntu users to install for themselves from official repositories.

History's lessons
Geert Bachot, Belgium 2010-01-19 05:31:01

In the 1980's, long before Tim Berners-Lee created http and by doing so 'invented' the World Wide Web, 'everybody' seemed to agree that
IBM's OS/2 Warp was technically superior to the Redmond OS, which was on its way to
becoming the mainstream and dominant OS for the desktop. One of OS/2's strengths was,
indeed, full compatibility with the Redmond OS. However, this resulted in a programmer's
non-interest in developing for OS/2 natively and shortly after, iBM was forced to abandon
the OS project all together. Beware, mortals! History might repeat itself!
That's unfortunately true

Ya, and I hope that doesn't happen. Whatever people may say, we loose performance when we use wine
to run microsoft apps. I'm not saying wine is a bad product -- not at all, it's great! But it's
inevitable that we lose performance in those apps.
I know a software developper who once told me he
would start to develop apps for windows that would work with Linux, so it would be cross-platform. I
thought that was unfortunate, because native apps are always better.
Don't confuse

It's easy to write software for Windows that also automatically works everywhere else. Use Python
for instance, and you should be able to write very, very, portable applications. There would not be
a big difference in performance.

The big
difference between OS/2 and Linux is there is already a large selection of native Linux applications
available to use instead of Windows apps. With OS/2 there was nothing much available in native
applications, and even fewer that had been ported very well (remember the abomination that was
Micrografx Mirrors?). Many of the Linux native apps have a history going further back in Unix
development, so they're already mature. Some other apps on Linux were developed there *first*, and
got ported to Windows later. So again, plenty of apps already available to Linux, which again was
never the case with OS/2.

We need to get more games on GNU/Linux. To do this, convince everyone you know, and your local
gamemaker (i.e., activision, blizzard, ea, valve, etc.) to use OpenGL instead (or in addition to)
DirectX. See this article: http://blog.wolfire.com/2010/01/Why-you-should-use
-OpenGL-and-not-DirectX

Also, we need to rally support around WINE, for two reasons, a.) so that
more windows programs will work well with GNU/Linux, and b.) so that software makers are aware of
the idea that GNU/Linux should have cross-platform compatible software.

Cheers!

Gaming on GNU/Linux with WINE
Shannon VanWagner 2010-01-20 06:56:32

@Geert, Thanks! I've dugg your page at http://digg.com/linux_unix/Some_links_for_Linux_ga
mes
Also, the link to ubuntugames(dot)org doesn't work for me.

I've been running games with WINE on
GNU/Linux, quite successfully, see here:
http://www.humans-enabled.com/2008/11/dell-i

and here:

Here's the letter I've been sending to gaming companies:
Dear
gamemaker - I've recently purchased some of your games for my family's entertainment.
I want to tell
you that there's something very unique about the computers we use: They are all running the Ubuntu
GNU/Linux operating system. Some are Ubuntu Linux 9.04 and we also have Ubuntu Linux 9.10.
We play
many Windows games on Linux using the open source windows compatibility layer called WINE by
codeweavers.com.
I've been promoting gaming on Linux for years now. I've written blog entries that
have gained some pretty good popularity, checkout these links:

So here's what I'm requesting:
Please make your games work well in Linux, by either making Linux native client installers, or by
using WINE. You can download ubuntu GNU/Linux for free from ubuntu.com, and you can install wine for
free from winehq.org.
need some drivers for
Lynne Stevens 2010-01-20 03:01:35

Also need some drvers for things like My ADS Tech DVD Express ( video transfer from the VCR / DVD
player to the computer ) Or the tablet for drawing on Linux sees it just does not know what to do
with the ITEM . .
And then there are Programs like Pinnacle Studio ( I wish they made a LINUX
version so I did not have to run windblows XP Pro ) And a few other programs like Corel Draw ..
would be nice if it worked inside of Linux . . I am thinking of UPGRADING to version 14 of Pinnacle
Studio shortly to see what new stuff it has
Wine is slow
Lynne Stevens 2010-01-20 03:06:48

But you can run Virtual Box and it is better But it uses part of your video and part of your ram to
use it MEANS you got to have a big Video card and tons of Ram . . I made the jump to 4 gig of DDR2
Ram so I could run it in my laptop ( showing things to some people who want to run Windblows stuff
any way )

But you need a Windows license to run Windows inside Virtual Box.
Need an Easy Shell Aware IDE
Tom Russell 2010-01-20 15:17:51

Runtime Revolution Studio is an easy peasy end user IDE that allows embedding command lines or
calling shell scripts. Called scripts can contain other scripting languages besides bash.
Such a
tool allows ordinary end users to create GUI applications, extending the functionality of their
personal computing on the desktop.
This after all, is the extra power that Linux gives users
through the shell and scripting tools, and having a point and click interface way of using these
tools is, in my opinion, a badly needed element for non programmer power users.
Max 2010-01-21 10:40:19

As long as some applications are NOT available natively for Linux, crossweavers/wine is the
solution.

By The way, I would like to request that AMAROK version 1.4 and GRIP be included in the
next ubuntu release.

OS/2, Linux and Windows
Stephan Struckmann 2010-06-28 01:13:31

I have some remarks to the historical comparison to OS/2. The point why IBM stopped support (in
2006: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OS/2#cite_note-0), not "shortly after" 1994, when they
tried to attack MS Windows 3.1(1)). There were, in my opinion, two reasons for this: The lack of
native software and the dependency on very recent hardware, especially OS/2 needed at least 16 MB of
RAM at a time, were 4 MB still were standard, so why should one buy an OS and expensive hardware
without having common software supported. Even non-standard software was expensive for an uncommon
OS. Of course, there was no need for software (and also for hardware driver) developers to support
OS/2, because there was no market -- a dilemma that, in combination with a halfhearted, led to the
end of OS/2.

Why we do not have to expect that for Linux:

* Linux runs on nearly every hardware

* There is pretty much software running on Linux, also office software.
* Many hardware
developers started implementing Linux drivers

So, the only thing, Linux really lacks, are current
games (I know, there are some, but the market is much bigger for Windows) and MS Office. The game
market, maybe, would exist, if we had more PCs with pre-installed Linux, who knows. The problem with
MS Office is, that people got used to it, and they dislike changes in their daily work environment.
But if a company switches to Linux, there is a soft pressure on using this environment also at home,
and thus, MS Office could, maybe, loose some customers; what we should not forget, is: MS Office,
even if I do not really like the software, is not that bad, people in forums often claim, at least
not, compared to e.g. OpenOffice, that probably is the most common alternative to MS Office. Both
have become too large and thus tend to be buggy. Both are easy to use for non-technical people. But:
MS has a power-user-friendly macro language (and IDE) while the OpenOffice object model needs much
more reading before the first macro runs. The database tool of OpenOffice is too young to be really
comparable to MS Access.

CrossOver office could be one alternative, but for my experiences it does
not work stable enough to be really in productive use. My boss tried it a couple of months, and
frequently lost work, when CrossOver died while saving the work. Maybe, in the meanwhile, this could
have become better, it was about two or three years ago, but it will always be kind of
"crutches" to use native windows binaries under Linux. But: We do need support for MS Office
documents in Linux, and having two major alternatives (besides KOffice, Gnome office producs, and so
on), is better than only one. But, if you want to use MS Office on a regular base, there is only one
way to do it with a reasonable amount of crashes: Use Windows. If you want to use Linux, because it
is more stable and probably more secure, you have to switch to another office software.

Sorry for
the long text, but I wanted to say this, because I still like OS/2; we still do not have a shell as
consequently object oriented as the WPS was.
