About Office 2007

Microsoft Office 2007 (officially called 2007 Microsoft Office system) is the most recent version of Microsoft's productivity suite. Formerly known as Office "12" in the initial stages of its beta cycle, it was released to volume license customers on November 30, 2006 and made available to retail customers on January 30, 2007. These are, respectively, the same dates Windows Vista was released to volume licensing and retail customers. Office 2007 contains a number of new features, the most notable of which is the entirely new graphical user interface called the Fluent User Interface (initially referred to as the Ribbon UI), replacing the menus and toolbars that have been the cornerstone of Office since its inception. Office 2007 requires Windows XP with Service Pack 2, Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1, or Windows Vista.

Office 2007 also includes new applications and server-side tools. Chief among these is Groove, a collaboration and communication suite for smaller businesses, which was originally developed by Groove Networks before being acquired by Microsoft in 2005. Also included is Office SharePoint Server 2007, a major revision to the server platform for Office applications, which supports "Excel Services", a client-server architecture for supporting Excel workbooks that are shared in real time between multiple machines, and are also viewable and editable through a web page.

Microsoft FrontPage has been removed from the Office suite entirely. It has been replaced by Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer, which is aimed towards development of SharePoint portals. Its designer-oriented counterpart Microsoft Expression Web is targeted for general web development. However, neither application is included in any of the Office suites. Also, since speech recognition and handwriting recognition are now part of Windows Vista, speech and ink components have been removed from Office 2007. Handwriting and speech recognition work with Office 2007 only on Windows Vista or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition.

Product Information

Microsoft Office 2007 is a complete suite of productivity and database software that includes the 2007 versions of Publisher, Excel, Outlook, Outlook with Business Contact Manager, PowerPoint, Access, and Word. Powerful contact management features help you consolidate all customer and prospect information in one place, while improved menus present the right tools exactly when you need them. Office 2007 also lets you develop professional marketing materials for print, e-mail, and the Web, and produce effective marketing campaigns in-house. In addition, you can create dynamic business documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, and build databases with no prior experience or technical staff.

Whether you're working on a financial spreadsheet, creating an important presentation, or building a customer database, Office 2007 helps you find and use the features you need faster and more easily. The intuitive look and feel of this software, including task-based menus and toolbars that are automatically displayed based on the feature you are using, improves your productivity. With Publisher 2007, you can create and publish a wide range of marketing materials for print, e-mail, and the web with your own brand elements including logo, colors, fonts, and business information. Or take advantage of hundreds of professionally designed and customizable templates, and more than 100 blank publication types. This software also lets you reuse text, graphics, and design elements, and convert content from one publication type to another. You can also combine and filter mailing lists and data from multiple sources, including the 2007 versions of Excel, Outlook, Outlook with Business Contact Manager, and Access, to create personalized print and e-mail materials, and build custom collateral such as catalogs and datasheets.

Wine version tested: 1.1.32
Windows version emulated: XP
Office version: Microsoft Office 2007

This is the simplest way to install office 2007 on ubuntu 9.10 this method should also work with ubuntu 8.04,8.10 and 9.04.

If you have an iso image to MS Office 2007 you will need an iso mounter to mount the image, the best one I found was "Furius ISO Mount" you can download it from the programs manager.

You have to install a version of wine after v1.1.10 older Wine releases will not work.

Step 1. Install Wine:
  • wget -q http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/387EE263.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -
  • sudo wget http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/...t.d/hardy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list
  • sudo apt-get update
  • sudo aptitude install wine
A .deb package can also be downloaded from http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/  please keep in mind that Ubuntu versions older than Hardy are no longer being updated.

Step 2. Download Winetricks
  • wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks
Step 3. Install Cabextract to run the Winetricks smoothly
  • sudo aptitude install cabextract
Step 4. Run Winetricks
  • sh winetricks
In the Winetricks window, install each of the following *individually*, which means check & install one, then re-run Winetricks and do the next:

* dotnet11
* gdiplus
* vb3run
* vb4run
* vb5run
* vb6run
* msxml3
* msxml4
* msxml6
* riched20
* riched30
* vcrun6

Step 5. Install MS Office 2007.

From your MS Office Installer CD or Directory, run:
  • wine setup.exe
Step 6. Run Office 2007

Professional support options

If you should run into any problems with the above howto you can always purchase CrossOver Office from the folks at Codeweavers. Crossover Pro runs on practically every Linux distribution as well as Intel Macs.

Updated 11/17/09 :

I removed most of the vcrun section and all of rpcrt4 sections, some people were having problems with C++ errors and Word not working for them after the install.

update works like a charm

That solved all the C++ problems. Works like a charm now! Had to reinstall Wine and also remove the
.wine dir but works great now.
Thanks!

Hello Willem,

Yea, allot of people had major problems with the C++ errors... I didn't see the
errors here and posted the original howto. I think this revised howto is just as good if not better
then the original.

I'm really glad it's working for you now.

Thanks for the support!

bug in Wine or Office 2007?
willem vervoort 2009-11-18 10:51:16

Not sure if I should post this here or on the Wine page. See above, managed to install Office 2007
fine. However, Word crashes when I try to insert a "symbol". I also did not manage to
configure outlook for exchange, it also crashed. I will do some more research. Maybe Office refers
to other Windows files that it now cannot find. I might still have to go to Crossover as Open Office
is really not that compatible with Win Office. I would be happy to use either, but the business
environment thinks otherwise (but that is another story).

Tom Wickline 2009-11-18 17:13:44

Hello Wilem

Thanks for the post here, and yea its a good idea to also post on WineHQ and file bug
reports. This howto is in no way perfect... It's the free option when it comes to Office 2007 on
Linux, FreeBSD etc. CrossOver is always a option and they have a really good support staff in place
to help with problems like this.

Cheers,
Tom

for my assignments.
Thanks!
robertneville777 2009-11-22 15:29:21

Thanks a ton for this guide! I'm in college, and I'm more use to Microsoft Word over Open Office.
I'm not saying OO is bad or anything, but I have to type up my essays in MLA format, and I've only
been taught this in Word, so you guys just saved my life. Word runs, saves, and loads perfectly on
my Ubuntu 9.10 installation. Thank you guys so much! Keep up the good work!
Tom 2009-11-23 04:14:41

did you not get any dotnet11 installation failed errors?
i keep trying and its always the same
outcome. i cant even run the office installation
Hey dude
robertneville 2009-11-23 20:18:29

I didn't have that error, but I had an error nevertheless. I found out that I was using an older
version of wine, although I installed it from synaptic, which is kinda wierd as I'm on 9.10.

Open
up the Wine Configuration, and then click on the "about" tab. What version does it say? I
was previously on 1.1.10, and I had problems, but when I completely uninstalled 1.1.10 and installed
1.1.33, the problems went away. If you need help on getting a newer version, let me know. I'm a *nix
noob myself ;)
Almost worked
Das Goat 2009-11-23 14:19:19

i got to the point where I install office 2007. It looked like it was working, then i got an error

err:seh:raise_exception Unhandled exception code c0000005 flags 0 addr 0x7eb28e88

anyone know
what this is?
Newer windows version needed
KwaggarookDagga 2009-11-24 09:21:32

I have done as said above till I get to the install part. I am a noob.
I cd.. till I get to the cd
rom where the office 2007 cd is placed and then run wine setup as per post.
Then I get the error
"newer version of windows needed" I am abit stuck at that any help will be appreciated
SOme issues resolved
KwaggarookDagga 2009-11-24 12:30:32

As per previous post I installed WINE 1.2 and that got rid of the "never version needed" but
now I can start all office apps except for access 2007.
Do I need to install some database apps
????

Thanks
Kwagga
Hey Kwagga Dagga
robertneville777 2009-11-24 12:46:54

Hey, I've only tried Microsoft Word so far, but I'll give it a try,as I installed the whole Office
suite. Anyway, I'll let you how it works out.
Das Goat 2009-11-24 13:27:41

Well, it helps when you reread the instructions. Adding the new wine repositories took me to wine
1.1.33

this time it loaded up until about 65% then I got this
error:

fixme:msi:ACTION_HandleStandardAction unhandled standard action
L"SetODBCFolders"

Any one else get this error?
Install keeps failing
Das Goat 2009-11-24 14:37:44

i tried rerunning the install about 3x. It keeps termination with a message on the windows screen
that there was an error.

In the terminal I get:

err:rpc:RpcAssoc_BindConnection server too
busy
fixme:htmlhelp:HtmlHelpW HH case HH_UNINITIALIZE not
handled.
fixme:netapi32:NetGetJoinInformation Stub (null) 0x32f03c 0x32f030
hmmm...
robertneville777 2009-11-24 15:42:34

Try a "complete removal" of all wine packages through synaptic, and then reinstall the new
version. Then redo the rest of the installation process as described above.
.winetrickscache
matt 2009-11-24 18:36:26

I suppose that this is more of a general winetricks question, but is it necessary to keep
.winetrickscache? I've been deleting it without any problems - but maybe someone knows otherwise.
Tom Wickline 2009-11-24 20:00:28

You can delete it and its 100% safe, its there so you dont have to re-download the files each time
you want to install them. its as it say's a cache of the downloads.

Tom
Tom Wickline 2009-11-24 20:03:35

If your on Ubuntu you can get 1.1.32 from here : http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/archive/index.html if you use Ubuntu 8.10 or 8.04 just scroll down the page.

Tom
Matt 2009-11-25 08:39:57

Actually it's probably worthwhile nothing that I'm using Archlinux with wine-1.1.33.

I don't really
think that these directions are Ubuntu-specific. What's most important are the 'dependencies' from
winetricks. At this point I've seen a number of articles with varying sets of stuff to install from
winetricks. Also, some articles have some other things to go along with them like registry edits.

I
like this one because it seems minimally invasive. I wish there was a single place where everyone
could collaborate and figure out exactly what is needed for Office 2007.

In addition, I've worked
out a few things to get a nice icon set as well as allow office documents to open automatically with
the correct type of file. I've thought about posting this before but I don't know if it's legal for
me to distribute the office icons I extracted from the .ico files on a windows machine.
Error trying to install MS OFFICE 2007
Emmanuel 2009-11-25 13:29:43

Every step worked for me except when I tried
sudo wget http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/...t.d/hardy.l ist -O
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list

it gave me HTTP 404 error. I ignored it and proceeded. when I typed wine setup.exe,
it brought the installation screen, I was able to give it a key and pressed continue. AT
which point it brought the screen that said install and when I clicked on it it ran for
some time and gave me the error below Ihighlighted in blue at the very bottom). Can you
tell me what I am doing wrong?

This procedure seems to leave certain features in an nonfunctional state. For example, all hell
breaks loose when trying to insert an equation in Word.

To fix this I do the following:

1) Install
winetrick wsh56 (not sure if this is necessary)
2) Install winetrick wininet
3) Run this:
cd
"$WINEPREFIX/drive_c/windows/temp"
echo "[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\
DllOverrides]" > override.reg
echo ""usp10"="native,builtin"" >>
override.reg
echo ""riched20"="native"" >> override.reg
regedit
override.reg

I don't know what your wineprefix is. The default is $HOME/.wine
I prefer
$HOME/.wine-msoffice2007 though so that I have an isolated office installation.
Excel add-in problem
PV 2009-12-23 22:27:52

Thanks a lot for these very precise instructions! Unfortunately, my Excel VBA add-ins (.xla files)
don't work. I get the following error message:

"Error accessing file. Network connection may
have been lost."

This is a big deal for me, as running .xla add-ins is the only reason why I am
running Office on Ubuntu. For all other purposes, OpenOffice serves me well.

Any help is greatly
appreciated!
better use playonlinux to install Office2007
Salman 2009-12-16 09:06:50

I installed office2007 using playonlinux was simple and is working fine...
still can't run .xla add-ins
PV 2009-12-23 22:28:10

Thanks for the tip. I tried playonlinux which was indeed a simple process but my .xla add-ins still
don't work.
Tom Wickline 2009-12-16 09:08:48

Thanks I poste about the PlayOnLinux Office 2007 install option here : http://www.wine-reviews.net/wine-reviews/playon...

Problems using MS Office through wine
Micheal Scofield 2009-12-21 17:42:32

hi,

I have successfully set up MS office 2007 in my PC(contatining Ubuntu 9.10) using
WINE including the Wintrick packages(msxml 3.0, msxml 4.0, msxml 6.0)..

The problems I am
facing are this, after using MS Word and saving it, I am unable to open the same file agin
in MSoffice word 2007. It is giving a error message " This file could not be
found (Z:homesawyerDesktophello.docx)" . Instead the same file can be opened in
Ubuntu's OpenOffice.org.

Thus I am facing this problem with every file I used MS office
and saved from it.

Please give a solution to this problem ..

With Regards,
Micheal

Update to SP2?
Mike 2009-12-23 07:33:10

Thank you for the write up. I am installing now..

There have been many bugs fixed through Service
Packs since the initial release of Office 2007. What's the best way to install service packs for
Office when running it in Wine?

I have been through google, to no avail..
Tom Wickline 2009-12-23 08:08:28

Hello Mike,

Actually this is something I need to look into.. When I find some free time after the
Holidays ill try my luck at installing the Service Packs. And if I can find a way to get them to
install ill do a post here about it and give instructions.

Happy Holidays

powerpoint crashes after 6 slides
Daniel 2009-12-23 19:00:13

Hi,

I installed office 7 under wine in 2 machines that are running ubuntu 9.10. In one, powerpoint
runs flawlessly, while in the other it crashes after the 7th slide. I followed every step in the
installation except for the one to install cabextract (in both cases). Any ideas?

Thanks,

Daniel
