About Office 2007

Microsoft Office 2007 (officially called 2007 Microsoft Office system) is the most recent version of Microsoft's productivity suite. Formerly known as Office "12" in the initial stages of its beta cycle, it was released to volume license customers on November 30, 2006 and made available to retail customers on January 30, 2007. These are, respectively, the same dates Windows Vista was released to volume licensing and retail customers. Office 2007 contains a number of new features, the most notable of which is the entirely new graphical user interface called the Fluent User Interface (initially referred to as the Ribbon UI), replacing the menus and toolbars that have been the cornerstone of Office since its inception. Office 2007 requires Windows XP with Service Pack 2, Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1, or Windows Vista.

Office 2007 also includes new applications and server-side tools. Chief among these is Groove, a collaboration and communication suite for smaller businesses, which was originally developed by Groove Networks before being acquired by Microsoft in 2005. Also included is Office SharePoint Server 2007, a major revision to the server platform for Office applications, which supports "Excel Services", a client-server architecture for supporting Excel workbooks that are shared in real time between multiple machines, and are also viewable and editable through a web page.

Microsoft FrontPage has been removed from the Office suite entirely. It has been replaced by Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer, which is aimed towards development of SharePoint portals. Its designer-oriented counterpart Microsoft Expression Web is targeted for general web development. However, neither application is included in any of the Office suites. Also, since speech recognition and handwriting recognition are now part of Windows Vista, speech and ink components have been removed from Office 2007. Handwriting and speech recognition work with Office 2007 only on Windows Vista or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition.

Product Information

Microsoft Office 2007 is a complete suite of productivity and database software that includes the 2007 versions of Publisher, Excel, Outlook, Outlook with Business Contact Manager, PowerPoint, Access, and Word. Powerful contact management features help you consolidate all customer and prospect information in one place, while improved menus present the right tools exactly when you need them. Office 2007 also lets you develop professional marketing materials for print, e-mail, and the Web, and produce effective marketing campaigns in-house. In addition, you can create dynamic business documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, and build databases with no prior experience or technical staff.

Whether you're working on a financial spreadsheet, creating an important presentation, or building a customer database, Office 2007 helps you find and use the features you need faster and more easily. The intuitive look and feel of this software, including task-based menus and toolbars that are automatically displayed based on the feature you are using, improves your productivity. With Publisher 2007, you can create and publish a wide range of marketing materials for print, e-mail, and the web with your own brand elements including logo, colors, fonts, and business information. Or take advantage of hundreds of professionally designed and customizable templates, and more than 100 blank publication types. This software also lets you reuse text, graphics, and design elements, and convert content from one publication type to another. You can also combine and filter mailing lists and data from multiple sources, including the 2007 versions of Excel, Outlook, Outlook with Business Contact Manager, and Access, to create personalized print and e-mail materials, and build custom collateral such as catalogs and datasheets.

Wine configuration

This is with a clean configuration directory and running in a 1024x768 virtual desktop.

Wine version tested: 0.9.58
Windows version emulated: XP
Office version: Microsoft Office 2007

$ winecfg

Once the .wine directory is built the configuration tool will start and you can set a virtual desktop in the graphics tab if you wish.

Installing Microsoft Office 2007

To install Microsoft Office 2007 the first thing you will need to get is a copy of CrossOver Games. CrossOver Games to install Office 2007? yes!

After you have a copy of CrossOver Games on hand install it, and then go to ~/cxgames/lib/wine and copy the rpcrt4.dll.so to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32 you will need to re-name the pointer rpcrt4.dll that is currently in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32 to *.bak and then re-name the rpcrt4.dll.so to rpcrt4.dll

While your already in /system32 re-name msxml3.dll also to *.bak the next thing to do is run winecfg again and set msxml3.dll and rpcrt4.dll to "native windows" select save and exit.

You will now need to Install Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML)3
The easiest way to do this is to download winetricks and do the install via the winetricks script.
You might need to mount your Office 2007 CD with the option -o unhide. This will avoid having problems with hidden files during installation.

Mount and cd to your disk and start the install.

mount -t iso9660 -o unhide /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom0

tom@tom:~$ cd /media/cdrom0
tom@tom:/media/cdrom0$ wine setup.exe

Office 2007 Word

Office 2007 Excel

Office 2007 PowerPoint

Office 2007 Publisher

Office 2007 OneNote

Notes
  • There is still a number of unresolved bugs, please keep this in mind.
  • If you don't already own CrossOver Office or CrossOver Games now is a good time to become a customer and help support future Wine development.
  • I would at this time like to take the time and give a one finger solute to the prick who has been going around saying the past install was a fake. I really cant say what I really want to, as im trying to cut back on cuss words.

Currently Outlook does not run; however, the next release of Bordeaux will support Outlook
2003 and 2007.

I'm using wine-1.0 with no luck.
Why use Crossover?
TREXX 2008-08-27 01:38:25

Why not just use TRiX to install native DCOM and MS XML? Instead of using built in DLL's from
crossover? Saves you from buying it!
It almost works all

I can use excel and word, but i cant use powerpoint =(
onenote writing?
Jason 2008-09-07 19:24:33

Do you have handwriting in onenote? Anybody who has onenote running, just click one of the pen
buttons and try to doodle with your mouse. I can't seem to get it running. It keeps complaining
about a lack of service pack 2.
Walkor 2008-09-11 08:09:21

To all the Ubuntu users trying to get this to work: Ubuntu has Wine 1.0.0 in it's repositories at
the moment. By downloading the latest Wine you can install Office 2007 with default settings (You
don't have to mess with the dll:s).

Step 1
Download the latest Wine as described here.

Step
2
Install Office 2007 with Wine (Don't mess with the dll:s).

Step 3
If you want to use Powerpoint,
then you have to set riched20.dll to native-then-builtin (Messing with the dll:s :)) as described
here. You don't have to download anything, just set the dll to native-then-builtin.

Step
4
Use.

This worked for me.

Tony Pattison 2009-03-26 08:57:39

got a home use version of Office 2007 and Ubunutu 8.10 64bit, with Wine 1.0.1 .

Put in the DVD. Ran
setup.exe. Got pop-up error

Setup cannot continue because a required file is either corrupted or
not available. Run setup again from the original source disc or download location.

Tried running it
from the terminal, same result.

That'll teach me for paying money for office software.
or...
Captian Obvious 2009-01-28 01:53:17

..maybe that will teach you to read the system requirements before buying software. Don't get me
wrong, there is a lot that m$ can be blamed for but you can't blame them if you intend to
successfully run their software built for their platform somewhere else. Wine is good and getting
better, but come on. Did you consider downloading a trial first?
But I did check first
Tony Pattison 2009-01-30 01:40:25

to Captain Obvious,
I did check first. I checked on the internet to see if others had successfully
installed Office 2007 using Wine. My search brought me here, to this site. And here I found Kenneth
Reitz's posting (above) that promised that it does run.

So, armed with the confidence that this
gave me, I spent the princely sum of £16.94 (UK pounds) to get a copy.

No, I didn't consider
downloading first, because (a) I didn't know you could and (b) I didn't think I needed to.

It was
because of Kenneth's posting that I posted here, to stop anybody else falling into the this
trap.

In the mean time I'll continue using the Open Office that came with Ubuntu and hope that
some future upgrade of Wine fixes the problem.

Regards
Tony
Easy Fix
Kenneth Reitz 2009-01-30 01:59:33

I'm sorry that you think that it won't work, but I gaurentee you that it will! Are you running WINE
version 1.1.9? I assume you probally 1.0.1 installed (the default when installing in ubuntu), and if
that is the case, then it will NOT work.

However, if you update your repositories and point to the
WINE HQ Dev server, you can, in fact, install Office 2007 within Ubuntu. I use it on a daily basis.

OneNote 2007 with PEN
FMAG 2009-03-16 04:14:08

I'm a proud owner of a Toshiba Portege M400 with most of Office 2007 applications running smoothly,
incluindo Outlook and OneNote.
I only have two problems that you may be able to help me with:
1 -
Powerpoint opens and runs any PPT or PPS mas no PPTX (when it tries to open one, even created with
the Powerpoint over Wine I get an error and Powerpoint shuts down).
2 - I can start OneNote and
manipulate NoteBooks without any problem. But when I click on the Ink icon I get an error saying
that I need Windows Tablet XP 2005 Tablet PC Service Pack 2 installed.

Any suggestions? I really
need OneNote to work with my pen since I write down all my meetings with this software.

Last but
not least I would like to say THANK YOU to all the Wine team that made this possible. Your efforts
are very well appreciated on this end!

Kind regards,

FMAG

Hello FMAG,

Can you post what your dll overrides are? and any registry settings you changed.

Tom
FMAG 2009-04-01 02:34:58

Thanks Tom for trying to help me with my situation.
Throughout my tests I have come across
CrossOver's implementation of Wine.
I reinstalled the machine and used CrossOver instead of Wine. I
currently have CrossOver 7.1 Professional installed over a Debian 5.0 OS.
I still have the same
problems :(.
I cannot recall wich DLLs I had overwriten in Wine but I do remember that I ran the
winestricks.sh script and nothing else. Does that help?
If you can help me with the OneNote issue I
will gladly remove CrossOver and put Wine back!
For what I have been finding on the internet there
seems to be no solution for using the ink feature in OneNote without a Windows OS behind it
:(

Thanks!

Kind Regards,

FMAG
Tom Wickline 2009-04-01 08:42:20

Hello FMAG,

You can run Wine and CrossOver both at the same time. So you dont have to remove one to
use the other :) If you can install Wine and then OneNote into .wine then run OneNote and post what
the terminal spews out when you try the ink feature I might be able to help you. You may also want
to file a bug on this in the Wine bugzilla.
