About iTunes 7.3

iTunes is an audio player for playing and organizing digital music files, and purchasing digital music files in the FairPlay digital rights management format. The iTunes Music Store is the component of iTunes through which users can purchase digital music files from within iTunes.

Users are able to organize their music into playlists, edit file information, record compact discs, copy files to a digital audio player, purchase music on the Internet through its built-in music store, run a visualizer to display graphical effects in time to the music as well as encode music into a number of different audio formats.

iTunes 7.3 includes Quicktime Player 7.1.6 and support for Apple's iPhone.

Instalation :

This is from a clean Wine configuration directory and all screenshots are from a virtual desktop of 1024x768.

Wine first run :

tom@tom:~$ winecfg
wine: creating configuration directory '/home/tom/.wine'...
fixme:midi:OSS_MidiInit Synthesizer supports MIDI in. Not yet supported.
wine: '/home/tom/.wine' created successfully.

Now select the Audio tab and set your audio driver, I use OSS and set Hardware Acceleration to "Emulation" If you want to run Wine in a virtual desktop now is a good time to select the Graphics tab and set the size of your preference. You will also want to set richedit20.dll & richedit32.dll as navite (Windows)

Now install the richedit30 update, make sure you go to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32 and rename richedit20.dll and richedit32.dll to *.bak or the richedit update wont work.

Go here iTunes 7.3 Download to download iTunes.

$wine iTunesSetup.exe

I have had the setup to quit with a error and also run to completion, This is a bug in Wine and sometimes the installer runs to completion and sometimes it doesn't. If it exits on a error, don't be alarmed just re-run the installer a second time and it should complete the install.

iTunes 7.3 and QuickTime 7.1.6 should now be installed, one of the first things you might want to do is run the QuickTime Player and go to the player preferences under Advanced > Video set the player to use (GDI only) this will work around the screen being painted black.

iTunes 7.3 first run

tom@tom:~$ cd /home/tom/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/iTunes
tom@tom:~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/iTunes$ wine itunes.exe
fixme:midi:OSS_MidiInit Synthesizer supports MIDI in. Not yet supported.
fixme:htmlhelp:HtmlHelpW HH case HH_INITIALIZE not handled.

burn to CD?
mike 2008-09-29 20:09:32

Anyone had any luck configuring itunes to burn to a CD?
Also a note
mike 2008-09-29 20:15:38

Just to clarify, a few points.

1) You set up the riched20/32 (native) windows using winecfg and
clicking onthe libraries tab. Click on the box with the triangle and find the riched* files and
then add them.

2) You want to move your original richedit*.dll files to riched.bak before you
install riched30 (which is done using the command: wine riched30.exe). Don't move the new
richedit*.dll files that are created after running riched30.exe
Anonymous 2009-07-27 15:09:09

But how do you get riched30.exe? Download somewhere?
Anonymous 2009-07-27 15:27:32

Right, I've installed iTunes 7.3 with this guide and it all works, until I try run iTunes. It shows
up with an error box saying that it cannot configure my CD/DVD Drivers so it won't recognize when a
CD or DVD is inserted. I'm not bothered about that bit as i don't use them drives much, not with
iTunes, so i click 'ok' and it loads iTunes, but it freezes and doesn't respond the second it
loads.. any help?

No burning/ripping?
Shiroku Ryuuki 2009-01-01 09:27:53

I've got it working pretty well although it is a bit sluggish (that might be because it's on an old
pc though...).
One thing I've noticed is each time I open it it tells me the registry settings used
by the itunes drivers for burning/ripping CDs are missing. anyone else have/had this problem and may
know how to fix?
Itunes for linux
Eduardo Hernandez 2009-01-29 12:25:27

Ok Im just a new user of the Ubunto program or linux however you wish to call it. I had no idea what
this program was about until I took my laptop to a best buy and talked to one of the Geek Squade
Techs. They told me little about it but use full to understand what the program is. I want to know
how I can get itunes on my computer for my ipod. Im still new to this because I have only used
windows. How and where can I get the program for the itunes for linux of ubunto?
Re: Eduardo Hernandez
Shiroku Ryuuki 2009-02-01 00:57:56

Hi Eduardo, to get Wine installed just open up the terminal (ubuntu's "command prompt"), and
type in
sudo apt-get install wine
This will install Wine on your computer. Then follow the
instructions here to configure it to work with iTunes.
That should sort it out for you! :)
Tips

HOW DO I GET ITUNES ON MY COMPUTER?
Ipod usb???
dan shepherd 2009-03-09 04:10:46

Hey,

I've installed Itunes with Wine on Ubuntu 8.04, but it won't recognise the
Ipod.
Apparently this is due to it not being able to see the USB connections???

No idea, am a bit of a
novice when it comes to these things, is there an easily downloaded patch to help with this?

Cannot see iTunes store "Accessing iTunes store...
anon 2009-04-22 08:43:50

Good tips on configuring QuickTime for the screen-going-black issue, and on hardware acceleration
for getting QuickTime to even run in the first place in order to configure it.

Now when I click on
iTunes store, I see "Accessing iTunes store..." at the top/status indicator. But it never
seems to complete.
On the console I see a whole bunch of messages
saying:
fixme:wininet:INET_QueryOption INTERNET_OPTION_PER_CONNECTION_OPTION stub

Is this related?
Is there a workaround?

I've tried iTunes 7.3 and 7.7

Wine version is wine-1.1.9
Update on Cannot see iTunes store
anon 2009-04-22 13:47:31

Fixed my issue with "Accessing iTunes store..." never completing.
What I did:

- Built the
latest wine version 1.1.19
- Installed iTunes 7.7.1.11

This worked with the instructions above.
(Except I didn't need to do the richedit step.)
Now I see content in the iTunes store window.

I
still see this log message all over the place:
fixme:wininet:INET_QueryOption
INTERNET_OPTION_PER_CONNECTION_OPTION stub

But it appears to be working. Thanks for this info!

awesome, no need for dual boot any more. thanks Wickline
Christoph Jahn 2009-06-15 18:30:04

Worked nice for me, although I am still using iTunes 6.05. The only additional thing I had to do,
was install an updated version of Quicktime (but that is a good idea anyway for security reasons)
Tom Wickline 2009-07-27 17:02:03

riched30.exe can be easly installed now with WineTricks, just download winetricks

chomd +x
winetricks
then run $ ./winetricks
install richedit native dlls :)

Cheers,
Tom
Tom Wickline 2009-12-05 20:43:48

Hello Matt,

Download the newest winetricks version and install mdac 2.8 and see if that helps.

Apple is linux Based...why not get the open source people to work on using iTunes for apple to run
on linux distro's rather than using Wine and a Windows version of iTunes? Seems like closer
relation?

If apple wants to battle against Windows allow iTunes to run on Linux Distro's and my
last hold to Windows is gone. I can now easily use a Linux Distro and syn my iPhone. Bye Bye
Windows!

Just hoping
Tom Wickline 2010-01-12 21:54:45

Apple is actually BSD based not Linux. :)

Ben Uliana 2010-01-13 08:56:24

Thanks for the info...I will look into BSD? Any further info about BSD?
Confused about the library files
Donny Bahama 2010-01-21 17:59:23

I'm new to Linux (ergo Wine) - and maybe this is more of a basic Wine question, but do I have to
store all my music on the Wine C-drive? Or can it see/use files within the Linux fle system (and/or
on NAS via mapped drives)? Thanks in advance for the help!
